FLICKER OF THE WEEK
We’re reading very good things about HELL OR HIGH WATER (CBS Films/Lionsgate), a contemporary desert noir starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster as desperate brothers who rob banks to save the family farm, although a veteran Texas Ranger played by Jeff Bridges is bent on intervening. The filmmaker David Mackenzie may have crafted a true summer sleeper with HELL, opening today at the Goodrich Savoy 16 in Savoy. From a sublime character study with pop to an on-the-nose moralist fantasy with Oopma Loompas, we have WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (Warner Bros.), the Gene Wilder vehicle directed by Mel Stuart and adapted from the children’s novella by Roald Dahl; it is amazingly dated and timeless with a surrealistic streak that becomes more charming with age. You can buy your golden tickets at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign for shows tomorrow, Sat., 8/27, at 1 and 7 p.m. Finally, the Flatlands Dance Film Festival brings the kinetic dance film subgenre to campus with two distinct shorts programs on Fri., 8/26, and Sat., 8/27, both at 7 p.m., with a bonus screening of the Misty Copeland documentary A BALLERINA’S TALE at 1 p.m. Sat., all at the UI Spurlock Museum in Urbana. Be aware that admission for this is at “special event” prices, so the best deal is the pass costing $25/general and $20/student for admission to everything. Leap at the chance! “FOW” is hereby fin.
