FLICKER OF THE WEEK
A way-above-par wartime duo returns to the area for one-day-only reprises, giving us the opportunity to score a double Bogie in big screen entertainment! It begins with CASABLANCA (Warner Bros.) at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign tomorrow, Sat., 9/17, 1 and 7 p.m., as this month’s entry in the News-Gazette sponsored classic film series. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid headline this oft-cited tale of lost love and international intrigue set primarily at a hopping nightclub in the Moroccan city of Casablanca, shrouded by the looming specter of Nazism. Directed by Michael Curtiz, CASABLANCA is as much a touchstone of the Hollywood “Golden Era” as is THE MALTESE FALCON (Warner Bros.), which plays the Normal Theater in Normal on Wed., 9/21, 7 p.m., as the first selection of a “Six Week Film School” focusing on film noir. John Huston made his directorial debut with this crackling mystery, starring Bogart as private eye Sam Spade from the Dashiell Hammett pulp stories along with Mary Astor, Gladys George, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, and “the black bird,” an iconic cinema MacGuffin if there ever was one; distinctive character actors Greenstreet and Lorre also appeared in CASABLANCA the following year. Coincidentally, a repackage of vintage favorites released this past Tues., 9/13, “Bogart & Bacall: 6-Film Collection” (Warner Bros. Video), bundles FALCON with a quartet famously pairing the hangdog actor and leading lady Lauren Bacall – TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, THE BIG SLEEP, DARK PASSAGE, and KEY LARGO – as well as the Bacall-Gregory Peck comedy DESIGNING WOMAN. “FOW” is hereby fin … even though, a fin is just a fin.
