FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts

With the nationwide theatrical release of the controversial Nate Parker film THE BIRTH OF A NATION (Fox Searchlight), revisiting the 1831 slave revolt in Virginia led by evangelist Nat Turner, and the streaming debut last week of the equally adept conversation-starter LUKE CAGE (Marvel Studios/Netflix), the Web series starring Mike Colter as a superhuman protector of the streets, we have high-profile examples of storytelling that takes liberal cues from the ongoing difficulties African-Americans face in our country. One is based on a real-life plantation uprising and the other is a fictional serial about an accidental defender, but, so what? As adults, we should welcome attempts within certain entertainment vehicles to inform or enlighten, especially ones as primed for the fight as these. Go with it and see what you might get out of them, regardless of your skin color or whether the material is “made just for you.” The Art Theater Co-op, which opened NATION last night, Thurs., 10/6, will host a discussion panel after the showing on Sun., 10/9, 7 p.m., featuring several faculty members from the UI Department of African-American Studies whose authority might enhance your viewing tenfold of this particular film. Elsewhere, fans of the hit stage musical Hamilton, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda as a biography of founding father Alexander Hamilton told in a contemporized tempo and cast with multicultural hues, can enjoy a preview of the behind-the-scenes documentary HAMILTON’S AMERICA on Mon., 10/10, 7 p.m., at the Champaign Public Library. This free event is sponsored by WILL-TV and the full program will air nationally on PBS stations on Fri., 10/21, under the “Great Performances” banner. “FOW” is hereby fin.
