CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History

100 Years AgoFriday, October 27, 1916: Proclaimed to be one of the grandest playhouses in Illinois and designed by local architectural firm Aschauer & Waggoner as a completely fireproof structure, the Lincoln Square Theatre opens for business in downtown Decatur and hosts a standing-room-only crowd that enjoys a touring production of the Broadway comedy, Hit-the-Trail-Holiday, as recounted in Lincoln Square Theatre by Jasper P. DeVidal. Although constructed to include a roomy backstage area, orchestra pit, and pitch-perfect acoustics for live performances, the Lincoln Square would be retrofit in the coming months to accommodate motion pictures. Managers eventually added a projection booth in June 1917 and played their first films, THE CALL OF HER PEOPLE and THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER, the next month, following with the installation of a pipe organ in January 1919.

FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts

Although we subconsciously handed out “FOW” honors to the “100th Birthday Bash” at the Lincoln Square Theatre in Decatur on Fri., 10/21, 7 p.m., and the “Movies under the Dome” show at the McLean County Museum of History in Bloomington on Tues., 10/25, 7 p.m., in a previous post, we feel the need to drop one more vote since neither of the above directly involves the watching of a feature film. You could argue we’re still fudging our judgment to a degree, but we’re having our Transylvanian cake and eating it too by suggesting an interactive trip to the Frankenstein place for a “shadow cast” presentation of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (20th Century Fox) during the next week! The time-warping reputation of this mid-Seventies cult item directed by Jim Sharman and created by co-star Richard O’Brien precedes itself handily, so we’ll jump to the left and cut to the chase by noting it has been rare for multiple area groups to perform alongside the big-screen Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon, and company in the same Halloween season. That is no problem in 2016 and we can thank the collegiate crowd for keeping the dream alive. University of Illinois students will do ROCKY at the Art Theater Co-op on 10/21, 10/22, 10/26, and 10/27, all at 10 p.m., Illinois State University students will do ROCKY at the Normal Theater on 10/27 and 10/29 at 7 p.m. as well as 10/28 at 10:30 p.m., and Millikin University students will do ROCKY at the Avon Theatre on 10/21 and 10/22 at the traditional stroke of midnight. Primp yourselves nicely and hold those props tightly as you seek out sugar and bi and everything not-nice at a participating movie theater! “FOW” is hereby fin, babies, so don’t you panic!

Note: There was no debate at MFHQ. We skipped the Fox Network remake, too.
