MFHQ MEMO | From Chambana Mendota with Love Chambana-in-mind

Not to be lost alongside the slow wave of new movies opening at theaters to limited capacity audiences, local film programs are hightailing it to virtual space by their respective organizers so as to not miss a beat and possibly attract a captive audience that is still somewhat limited in their daily doings. We already witnessed the first such attempt via Facebook on Saturday, August 15, when the Pens to Lens “digital gala” presented their most kid-central edition to date. I believe we haven’t had a similar offering since the online version of the University of Illinois student showcase Illini Film Fest in May and the Insect Fear Film Festival at the UI Foellinger Auditorium back in February. Others plan to move forward as well with adaptations of events once meant for public consumption before the pandemic set in, starting with this weekend’s Flatlands Dance Film Festival. Choice short subjects from the world over will alternate with Zoom interviews between filmmakers and host Laura Chiaramonte, festival director and dance instructor at UIUC; a curated set live streams on Vimeo later tonight, Friday, September 4, starting at 7 p.m., while the competition section broadcasts from the same Vimeo account tomorrow night, Saturday, September 5, also at 7 p.m., both free of charge with donations accepted. Coming soon to test this new model for presentation further are the Dead in Decatur International Film Festival in October and the Pygmalion cultural extravaganza of Champaign-Urbana at September’s end. Recent publicity for the latter revealed a modest line-up of talent across several disciplines including a handful of audio-visual components that include the WILL-TV special ILLINOIS COUNTRY with discussion on the music business, an awareness raiser for the LGBTQ+ themed documentary JIMMY IN SAIGON with filmmaker Peter McDowell and author Dan Savage, and a retrospect screening of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE featuring actors Jon Heder, Efren Ramírez, and Jon Gries. It will be interesting to learn which offerings connect with internet viewers and who elects to sit out until our communities are safe enough to resume in-person camaraderie in the arts.
