FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
Methinks it’s time to return to the classic “three things” format of the Report so that we can broaden our horizons weekly on the cinema front and not just be focused on the local. (Although, I’ll happy go back on that in a few moments with good reason.) First, the beleaguered theatrical industry is marking a new “National Cinema Day” on Saturday, September 3, wherein participating venues will be selling $3 tickets to all shows, all day long. Their timing is arguably not great, given the horrible drop in box-office revenue this current weekend, yet we might as well take advantage of the gesture. Next, Brooklyn-based curator Maya S. Cade is marking the one-year anniversary of launching the Black Film Archive with the release of new merchandise to help fund her mission to inform us on the wide swathe of cinema that addresses the black experience. Don’t hesitate to visit the Archive’s easy-to-navigate website and be impressed by the deep and necessary dive it already provides. Finally, if you’re interested in how Champaign-Urbana citizens might have played a part in the nascent Hollywood of the Left Coast during the early 20th century, be sure to watch this video of Perry C. Morris’ “History Talk” on the life of actress and Urbana native Virginia Sale, given at the Champaign County History Museum back on Thursday, August 18. Morris also provided a retrospect on her brother, the humorist Charles “Chic” Sale, in June at the museum.
