FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
This week, we have three things to Report that blipped on our radar thanks to the socials. First is a heads-up from Smile Politely that the University of Illinois Program in Jewish Culture & Society has invited the filmmaker Michael Mayer to campus as a visiting scholar who will teach classes and workshops over the next few weeks. There is a meet-and-greet for Mayer, whose recent feature HAPPY TIMES was released in the United States last year by Artsploitation Films, set for this coming Tuesday, September 6, 7:30 p.m., at the Analog Wine Library in downtown Urbana, and RSVP with the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation is required for the free event. A few blocks over, the Urbana Free Library is offering a free webinar through Illinois Libraries Present with the veteran actress and deaf rights advocate Marlee Matlin (CODA, THE WEST WING) on Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m. You can register for the talk through this link, which is keyed into Deaf Awareness Month and will be broadcast using Zoom. And then, somewhere in Champaign-Urbana, the cauldron is cooking up the next gruesome movies of Jeff Kacmarynski (ESSENCE), who is resuscitating projects that were announced prior to the pandemic putting the clamps to our creatives. They include a grindhouse-style short that is called WITCH ON A WALKER and a feature-length horror drama called WITH CHILD; he is actively casting and crewing both, announcing recently through Facebook that Lauren Ellen Wilson (PROJECT SKYQUAKE) and Lynn Lowry (THE CRAZIES, ESSENCE) have accepted lead roles in CHILD.
