NEW ART FILM FESTIVAL | Our Scene on the Big Screen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Launched on a sincere vote of confidence by Sanford Hess<\/strong> and a community programming gamble by Jason Pankoke<\/strong>, the New Art Film Festival<\/strong> has provided the movie storytellers of downstate Illinois<\/strong> with their own theatrical showcase since 2010. Originally scheduled as a complement to the annual Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong> of Champaign County<\/strong> in large part due to that event\u2019s lack of film and video content, the NAFF has been hosted by the Art Theater<\/strong> in downtown Champaign<\/strong> for all its shows to date. After producing and emceeing nine editions over the same number of years, Pankoke was forced to cancel the tenth NAFF when the Art closed for business in October 2019. Its future is being debated. C-U CONFIDENTIAL SHOW | A Modest Proposal that Worked<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leading directly to the creation of the New Art Film Festival<\/strong>, this one-off presentation was organized and hosted by Jason Pankoke<\/strong> in conjunction with the Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong>. Its purpose was to offer the community a lively sampler of what the movies made locally in downstate Illinois<\/strong> looked like at the time. Having recently spun off C-U Confidential<\/span><\/strong> from MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> as its own print entity, the public outreach made perfect sense to Pankoke given that no exhibitions of the sort existed in Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>. Two of several creative touches that helped to make the effort distinct were that Urbana\u2019s Caffe Paradiso<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, so named after the famous Italian film CINEMA PARADISO<\/strong>, hosted the show in their expanded seating area, formerly home to a second That\u2019s Rentertainmen<\/a><\/span>t<\/strong> video store. | Jason Pankoke<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

MICRO-FILM MOVIE SHOWS | Wading into Downtown Waters<\/strong><\/p>\n

Previous collaborations with the Independent Media Center<\/strong> in 2003 were a success and encouraged Jason Pankoke<\/strong> to return to his promotional roots, given that MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> was in its \u201csecond wind\u201d phase of publishing. A solo showing later the same year at Mike \u2018n Molly\u2019s<\/strong>, a downtown Champaign<\/strong> bar with primarily \u201ctownie\u201d and student-age clientele<\/a><\/span>, was followed by a 2006 series at the same in an effort to establish a microcinema concept with audience-friendly genre films. Most screenings were held in the most casual of settings, the ivy-lined Mike \u2018n Molly\u2019s beer garden, and all selections came from the pool of material submitted for coverage to the journal during its run. | Jason Pankoke<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

IMC-MICRO-FILM MOVIE NIGHT | Jabbing the Status Quo<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following the first MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> show, organizer Jason Pankoke<\/strong> kept tabs on the cultural scene of Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> to see where he might contribute. The weekly bar-and-beer meetings by members of the Production Group at the Independent Media Center<\/strong><\/a><\/span> \u2013 Paul Riismandel, Nicole Lamers, Colleen Cook<\/strong> (Reiner<\/strong>), Drew Tarico, Dave Powers<\/strong>, and Pankoke \u2013 resulted in ideas for various projects and outreach such as a guerilla film event, held at the original IMC location in downtown Urbana and serving as pointed counterprogramming to the opening night of Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> across town. MICRO-FILM VERIT\u00c9 | Personal Cinema in Action in the C-U<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> had built enough goodwill for the independent film arts<\/a><\/span> in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois<\/strong>, that loyal volunteer Jason Pankoke<\/strong> chose to carry the torch once it became known the seminal DIY event would not return in 2001. A timely catalyst was provided by the \u2018zine\/art exhibit \u201cZineophilia<\/strong>\u201d at Southlynn Studios<\/strong> in the Lincoln Building<\/strong> of downtown Champaign, which featured Pankoke\u2019s journal MICRO-FILM<\/span><\/strong> and took place directly across the street from the Highdive<\/strong> concert venue. It seemed a natural fit to offer an offbeat movie event at a non-theatrical space in the spirit of Freaky Film and, luckily, Highdive talent buyer Ward Gollings<\/strong> agreed. Like \u201cZineophilia,\u201d \u201c\u201cMICRO-FILM Verit\u00e9<\/strong>\u201d was promoted as a featured stop on the \u201cOctopus<\/span> Art Walk<\/strong>,\u201d a progenitor of the Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. | Jason Pankoke<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
