{"id":10000,"date":"2016-05-06T09:00:31","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T15:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=10000"},"modified":"2016-05-13T19:41:16","modified_gmt":"2016-05-14T01:41:16","slug":"calendar-du-c-u-may-6-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=10000","title":{"rendered":"Calendar du C-U: May 6-12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Our unique movie and media <\/em><strong>Calendar<\/strong> <em>appears every Friday on <\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong><\/span><em> and caters to the discerning tastes of citizens in the downstate region anchored by <\/em><strong>Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA<\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PLAYING THIS WEEK<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 5\/6\/16-5\/12\/16<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>FLICKER OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The fact that your humble editor has already seen it twice in the past year on late-night <strong>Turner Classic Movies<\/strong> does not discourage us from banging the \u201c<strong>FOW<\/strong>\u201d drum in favor of <strong>THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION<\/strong> (<strong>Spheeris Films<\/strong>), rocking the <strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> for a solo \u201cWomen on Top\u201d gig next <strong>Weds., May 11, 7:30 p.m.<\/strong> This first entry in <strong>Penelope Spheeris<\/strong>\u2019 fabled and long out-of-circulation series, focused on <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> youth as framed by hotbeds of music and underground culture, was filmed in 1979-80 during the apex of punk rock\u2019s emergence as a feverish force. Genre stalwarts such as <strong>Germs, Circle Jerks, Alice Bag Band, Black Flag<\/strong>, and <strong>X<\/strong> appear in performance and during down times, while the filmmaker also interviews (and occasionally grills) a mix of semi-anonymous kids on a stage decorated only with a stool and a single dangling light fixture. Out of the mouths of tattered babes come hopes, dreams, fears, thoughts, aggression, and rebellion that we can empathize with, the spell broken on occasion by the off-color epithet that might be frowned upon today. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>CUBlog<\/strong><\/span> sincerely hopes a good turnout for <strong>DECLINE<\/strong> encourages the Art to book <strong>PART II: THE METAL YEARS<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cthe fun one\u201d \u2013 and <strong>PART III<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cthe sobering one\u201d \u2013 in the near future.
