FLICKER OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fact that your humble editor has already seen it twice in the past year on late-night Turner Classic Movies<\/strong> does not discourage us from banging the \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d drum in favor of THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION<\/strong> (Spheeris Films<\/strong>), rocking the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> for a solo \u201cWomen on Top\u201d gig next Weds., May 11, 7:30 p.m.<\/strong> This first entry in Penelope Spheeris<\/strong>\u2019 fabled and long out-of-circulation series, focused on Los Angeles<\/strong> youth as framed by hotbeds of music and underground culture, was filmed in 1979-80 during the apex of punk rock\u2019s emergence as a feverish force. Genre stalwarts such as Germs, Circle Jerks, Alice Bag Band, Black Flag<\/strong>, and X<\/strong> appear in performance and during down times, while the filmmaker also interviews (and occasionally grills) a mix of semi-anonymous kids on a stage decorated only with a stool and a single dangling light fixture. Out of the mouths of tattered babes come hopes, dreams, fears, thoughts, aggression, and rebellion that we can empathize with, the spell broken on occasion by the off-color epithet that might be frowned upon today. CUBlog<\/strong><\/span> sincerely hopes a good turnout for DECLINE<\/strong> encourages the Art to book PART II: THE METAL YEARS<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cthe fun one\u201d \u2013 and PART III<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cthe sobering one\u201d \u2013 in the near future. We\u2019d also like to mention a new release that looks promising, FRANCOFONIA<\/strong> (Music Box Films<\/strong>), which will debut at the Normal Theater<\/strong> tonight, Fri., May 6, 7 p.m.<\/strong> At first glance, it seems primed to do for the Louvre<\/strong> in Paris, France<\/strong>, what filmmaker Alexander Sokurov<\/strong> previously accomplished at the State Hermitage<\/strong> of St. Petersberg, Russia<\/strong>, in RUSSIAN ARK<\/strong> (2002) \u2013 use museum settings as a springboard for exploring the respective countries\u2019 heritage and culture through the arts, captured with rich cinematography and a sense of grandeur.<\/p>\n
