Market St.<\/strong> is this mini-marathon will be free admission and projected indoors on the first floor, considering that a series of potentially severe weather fronts will be making their way through <strong>Illinois<\/strong> the next 72 hours. [<em>What a rouse! The final days of Mike n\u2019 Molly\u2019s have transpired in nothing but partly sunny and slightly blustery conditions, meaning we could inhabit the beer garden instead.<\/em> \u2013 ed.] Once you arrive, be sure to greet owner <strong>Michael Murphy<\/strong> with best wishes on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Raise a glass for Mike N Molly\u2019s :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/arts-entertainment\/local\/2016-03-17\/raise-glass-mike-n-mollys.html\" target=\"_blank\">retiring from his bar career<\/a><\/span> after the <strong>Memorial Day<\/strong> weekend, do your part in depleting the alcohol stock, take a seat among the well-worn, red-and-green d\u00e9cor, and let down your bemused guard \u2013 \u201cThese are<em> low budget, local, indie <\/em>films, right?\u201d \u2013 so you can enjoy the final event of its kind in this beloved establishment with an open mind and generous heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What better motion pictures to present to an audience that will primarily be Mike n\u2019 Molly\u2019s regulars than ones cooked up by the very same crowd? We call them \u201cfrat films\u201d not in terms of their setting, <em>a la<\/em> <strong>NATIONAL LAMPOON\u2019S ANIMAL HOUSE<\/strong>, but their origins in the hands of adventurous everymen and \u2013women who belong to the informal \u201cdowntown Champaign drinking fraternity,\u201d <strong>Pi Omega Omega<\/strong>, which amazingly has retained its \u201cword on the street\u201d mystique to this day. [<em>If you must satisfy your curiosity, <\/em><strong>The Brass Rail<\/strong><em> has been named the watering hole successor for followers of <\/em><strong>St. Jack<\/strong><em> and <\/em><strong>Sweet Sue<\/strong><em>.<\/em> \u2013 ed.] It stands to reason that idea dude <strong>Jason Butler<\/strong> and camera guy <strong>Mark Peaslee<\/strong> struck enough of a positive chord within the Pi Omega ranks, employing them to participate in a string of ambitious genre comedies with the sparest of resources and variable learning curves, that their culture essentially fostered its own filmography. As a late blooming confidant of the Butler-Peaslee tandem and a fellow Pi Omegan, I can honestly describe these wonders as being the hard-earned results of a wry \u201cmother of invention\u201d sensibility operating <em>way<\/em> outside any professional studio or \u201cfilm scene.\u201d For that, we should be as happy as <strong>PBR<\/strong>-inebriated clams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cMovie Night\u201d will include three recent examples direct from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BrainSmart Productions @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/brainsmart\/featured\" target=\"_blank\">the<strong> BrainSmart Productions<\/strong> vault<\/a><\/span> located in <strong>Portland, Oregon<\/strong>, all directed by Champaign native Butler and populated with his friends, neighbors, and spouse and collaborator <strong>Ann Fitzgerald<\/strong>. \u201cEpisode 1\u201d of <strong>THE ADVENTURES OF THE SCREAMING APE<\/strong> will play first, followed by \u201cIssues\u201d 2 and 3 of <strong>WEREWOLF CEMETERY<\/strong>.
