In less than two weeks, the incredible story of former Archer Daniels Midland <\/strong>executive and delusional whistle-blower Mark Whitacre <\/strong>will hit the big screen in THE INFORMANT!<\/strong>, directed by prolific maverick Steven Soderbergh<\/strong> (CHE<\/strong>, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE<\/strong>) and adapted by Scott Z. Burns <\/strong>(THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM<\/strong>) from the Kurt Eichenwald <\/strong>book. This also means that in less than two weeks, hordes of citizens from Decatur <\/strong>and its outlying communities will be packing the Avon Theater<\/a> <\/strong>in the Soy Capital\u2019s downtown to see the movie shot in their neck of the woods in late spring 2008. Folks not living in Macon County <\/strong>who want to get a crack at THE INFORMANT!<\/strong> more sooner than later may need to plan ahead and be willing to log some travel miles\u2026<\/p>\n

It seems the Avon secured a print for the movie\u2019s September 18 <\/strong>national release date, three full weeks before Warner Bros.<\/strong> expands the number of screens playing THE INFORMANT!<\/strong> on October 9<\/strong>. This not only means that Skip Huston <\/strong>and his crew nabbed a primo Decatur exclusive \u2013 bully for them! \u2013 but that other cities not named Los Angeles, New York<\/strong>, and Chicago <\/strong>such as Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal<\/strong>, and Springfield <\/strong>might have to wait nearly a month before THE INFORMANT! <\/strong>appears at their own cinemas.<\/p>\n

Will THE INFORMANT! <\/strong>be worth a road trip? Keep an eye on your favorite movie news Web sites this week as the reviews start rolling in from the Venice Film Festival<\/strong>, where the film had its world premiere roughly 24 hours ago<\/a>, and the Toronto International Film Festival<\/strong>, which will offer its North American premiere on September 11<\/strong><\/a>. C-U Blogfidential <\/strong>found coverage on Variety<\/span><\/strong> earlier today, including a positive Todd McCarthy <\/strong>review<\/a> and Soderbergh comments from Venice<\/a>, and has noticed a lot of blogosphere buzz about this movie dating back to the beginning of summer.<\/p>\n

Should you be intrigued enough to pay the Avon a visit, one caveat <\/em>\u2013 Huston announced in his weekly e-newsletter that INFORMANT!<\/strong> advance tickets will not be sold on-line or over the phone. In other words, one must take one\u2019s chances in arriving without ticket in hand or <\/em>one must visit the theater soon to purchase advance tickets in person. Huston has confirmed for CUBlog <\/strong>that, as of this writing, only the 7 p.m. show on opening night can be considered \u201csold out,” but who knows how that status might shift during the next 10 days.<\/p>\n

p.s.2<\/em> It looks like this engagement is not<\/em> as exclusive as it once seemed, according to an August 18<\/strong> report<\/a> by the Decatur (IL) Herald-Review<\/span><\/strong> and an August 28<\/strong> post<\/a> by H-R<\/span> columnist Tim Cain<\/strong>, with the latter quoting data from FilmJerk.com<\/span><\/strong> that states THE INFORMANT!<\/strong> will now open on 2,000<\/em> screens<\/em> come September 18. Considering the press it’s been receiving, the apparent change in distribution strategy is not exactly “un-believ<\/em>-able.”<\/p>\n
