Their inaugural show, \u201c<strong>The 1st Annual <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Octopus<\/span> Sci Fi Film Festival<\/strong>,\u201d presents several science fiction classics and favorites across a two-week summer stretch at Urbana\u2019s <strong>Thunderbird Theater<\/strong>, touted in its previous first-run era as having the largest movie screen in <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>. Selected by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Octopus<\/span> publisher <strong>Paul Young<\/strong> with assistance from his staff, including future <strong>New Art Film Festival<\/strong> program director <strong>Jason Pankoke<\/strong>, the marathon pairs episodes from the 1940 serial incarnation of pulp hero \u201c<strong>The Shadow<\/strong>\u201d with a choice roster: <strong>2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL<\/strong> (1951), <strong>DR. STRANGELOVE, INVADERS FROM MARS<\/strong> (1953), <strong>THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, THE ROAD WARRIOR, THE TERMINATOR<\/strong>, and <strong>THE WAR OF THE WORLDS<\/strong> (1953). All films are projected from 35 and 16 mm prints rented through various agencies from all over the <strong>United States<\/strong>. Similar shows of a more esoteric bent would follow the well-received \u201cSci Fi\u201d experience over the next year, ceasing in mid-1997 after the Brew &amp; View\u2019s closure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>FLICKER OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the spirit of our <strong>Confidential Almanac<\/strong> entry above, we shine the \u201c<strong>FOW<\/strong>\u201d seal into the night skies above the <strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> to mark the not-very-secret location of \u201c<strong>Big Screen Noir<\/strong>,\u201d a new retrospect series beginning on <strong>Fri., 7\/1<\/strong>. Six vintage and contemporary hallmarks in the genre will provide audiences a sampling of the storytelling form over a two month period: <strong>THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI<\/strong> (starting <strong>7\/1<\/strong>) with <strong>Rita Hayworth<\/strong> and <strong>Orson Welles<\/strong>, the latter directing; <strong>THE KILLING<\/strong> (1956; starting <strong>7\/8<\/strong>) with <strong>Sterling Hayden<\/strong> and directed by<strong> Stanley Kubrick<\/strong>; <strong>CAPE FEAR<\/strong> (1962; starting <strong>7\/28<\/strong>) with <strong>Robert Mitchum<\/strong> and directed by <strong>J. Lee Thompson<\/strong>; <strong>KISS ME DEADLY<\/strong> (1955; starting <strong>8\/5<\/strong>) starring <strong>Ralph Meeker<\/strong> and directed by <strong>Robert Aldrich<\/strong>; <strong>DOG DAY AFTERNOON<\/strong> (starting <strong>8\/26<\/strong>) with <strong>Al Pacino<\/strong> and directed by <strong>Sidney Lumet<\/strong>; and <strong>THE BIG LEBOWSKI<\/strong> (starting <strong>9\/2<\/strong>) with <strong>Jeff Bridges<\/strong> and directed by <strong>Joel Coen<\/strong>. The Art is offering <span style=\"color: #800000;\">a $36 festival pass exclusively through their Web site<\/span> that will save you $2 per film ticket as well as award the bearer a free small popcorn at each show.
