FLICKER OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you have designs on seeing the newest Steven Spielberg<\/strong> fantasy-adventure but your heart (and wallet) aren\u2019t set on a 3-D presentation, you might catch THE BFG<\/strong> (Walt Disney Pictures<\/strong>) at the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> beginning today, Fri., 7\/1<\/strong>, and support Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>\u2019s sole independent first-run theater with your disposable income. That said, we\u2019ve decided not to award the ol\u2019 BFG our coveted \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d as it will instead go to the Art\u2019s \u201cSmart Kids<\/strong>\u201d matinees of acclaimed animated films that will begin on Sat., 7\/2<\/strong>, with Irish<\/strong> favorite SONG OF THE SEA<\/strong> from the makers of THE SECRET OF KELLS<\/strong>. Subsequent entries will include the Oscar<\/strong>-nominated BOY & THE WORLD<\/strong> from Brazil<\/strong> (Sat., 7\/9<\/strong>), Hayao Miyazaki<\/strong>\u2019s early Japanese<\/strong> classic MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO<\/strong> (Sat., 7\/16<\/strong>), and the international co-production KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS<\/strong> (Sat., 7\/30<\/strong>) based on West African<\/strong> folk tales. The series will conclude with \u201cBest of the Fest: Kid Flicks 1<\/strong>,\u201d an hour-long sampling of current all-ages shorts picked by the organizers of the New York International Children\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong>, on Sat., 8\/6<\/strong>. Each plays at both 10 a.m.<\/strong> and 12 p.m.<\/strong> on their respective dates and, amazingly, are free admission! This is a neat opportunity to introduce the young ones in our lives to features bursting with imagery, sound, insight, and wonder instead of the standard-issue slapstick and bluster seen in so many Hollywood<\/strong> cartoon counterparts. Still give THE BFG<\/strong> a chance, however, for a quality Roald Dahl<\/strong> adaptation is always welcome; coincidentally, or so we think, the last day of \u201cSmart Kids\u201d on 8\/6<\/strong> is the same day a previous movie based on a Dahl story will play two blocks away at the Virginia Theatre<\/strong> \u2013 WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY<\/strong>, famously starring the great Gene Wilder<\/strong> in the title role.<\/p>\n
