Happy Birthday to<\/strong> \u2026 Sunday, July 24:<\/em> Colin Price<\/strong> (director, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO HELL) \u2026 celebrate!<\/strong><\/p>\n

20 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Thursday, July 25, 1996:<\/em> James R. Velde<\/strong>, a former Hollywood<\/strong> executive, passes away at the Motion Picture & Television Hospital<\/strong> in Woodland Hills, CA<\/strong>, at age 82, according to an obituary<\/span><\/a> published by the Los Angeles Daily News<\/strong><\/span>. Velde spent his entire career in the motion picture industry apart from serving in the United States<\/strong> army during World War II<\/strong>, starting at a regional shipping office of Paramount Pictures<\/strong> in the mid-1930s and eventually retiring in 1977 as a senior vice president of United Artists<\/strong> after nearly 30 years with that studio. He is well regarded in the industry for his innovations in film distribution and marketing as well as philanthropy. A native of Bloomington, IL<\/strong>, Velde joined Paramount after graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University<\/strong>, per a 1976 Boxoffice<\/strong><\/span> magazine article<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

FLICKER OF THE WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

We have temporarily renamed the \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d department to \u201cFlashback of the Week<\/strong>\u201d so we can justify honoring the organizers of a past happening as encouragement for them to keep it up in the future! Call us surprised (but not really, since niche events often fly under the radar in college towns) to read an article in the Illinois State University<\/strong> student newspaper, The Daily Vidette<\/strong><\/span>, about a neat little development one stinkin’ day<\/em> after it occurred. Seems that on Tuesday, June 28<\/strong>, the McLean County Museum of History<\/strong> in downtown Bloomington<\/strong> hosted the first show of a proposed series titled \u201cMovies under the Dome<\/strong>\u201d at which they intend to \u201c[feature] movies with a McLean County<\/strong> connection,\u201d per their own announcement<\/a><\/span>. The first choice, RING OF FEAR<\/strong>, is a 1954 Warner Bros.<\/strong> release starring world famous animal trainer Clyde Beatty<\/strong> and celebrated crime fiction author Mickey Spillane<\/strong> as themselves in a circus-set murder mystery. Also appearing in the CinemaScope<\/strong> production are numerous real-life big top performers of yore, including area native Richard Shipley<\/strong>, who had lived in those other Twin Cities at some point; the Bloomington-Normal<\/strong> area once served as a \u201cwinter camp\u201d destination for traveling circuses during the first half of the 20th century. Other than presenting RING OF FEAR <\/strong>to their audience in a new light as a cultural time capsule laced with local threads, organizers arranged for rare artifacts from the unique \u201cCircus and Allied Arts<\/strong>\u201d collection housed at ISU to be on display for everyone to enjoy. Given our own editorial leanings that stress the worth of the past in the present, we can\u2019t help but approve of this direction charted by the museum! Happily, their education outreach coordinator Anthony Bowman<\/strong> confirmed for C-U Blogfidential<\/strong><\/span> via e-mail the series would pick up in the fall, thanks to the enthusiastic response elicited by the RING OF FEAR<\/strong> event. You can bet your bottom circus peanut we will absolutely<\/em> add those screenings to the Calendar<\/strong>, if not attend them as well, so keep watch if central Illinois<\/strong> representation in cinema means something to you!<\/p>\n
