Velde<\/strong>, a former <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> executive, passes away at the <strong>Motion Picture &amp; Television Hospital<\/strong> in <strong>Woodland Hills, CA<\/strong>, at age 82, <a title=\"Movie Distribution Innovator Velde, 82 :: Los Angeles Daily News, 7-30-96\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreelibrary.com\/MOVIE+DISTRIBUTION+INNOVATOR+VELDE,+82.-a083956234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">according to an obituary<\/span><\/a> published by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Los Angeles Daily News<\/strong><\/span>. Velde spent his entire career in the motion picture industry apart from serving in the <strong>United States<\/strong> army during <strong>World War II<\/strong>, starting at a regional shipping office of <strong>Paramount Pictures<\/strong> in the mid-1930s and eventually retiring in 1977 as a senior vice president of <strong>United Artists<\/strong> after nearly 30 years with that studio. He is well regarded in the industry for his innovations in film distribution and marketing as well as philanthropy. Call us surprised (but not really, since niche events often fly under the radar in college towns) to read an article in the <strong>Illinois State University<\/strong> student newspaper, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Daily Vidette<\/strong><\/span>, about a neat little development <em>one stinkin&#8217; day<\/em> after it occurred. Seems that on <strong>Tuesday, June 28<\/strong>, the <strong>McLean County Museum of History<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Bloomington<\/strong> hosted the first show of a proposed series titled \u201c<strong>Movies under the Dome<\/strong>\u201d at which they intend to \u201c[feature] movies with a <strong>McLean County<\/strong> connection,\u201d <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Upcoming Events: Movies Under the Dome - Ring of Fear :: McLean County Museum of History\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mchistory.org\/participate\/events\/event.php?event=2016-06-28-movies-under-the-dome-ring-of-fear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">per their own announcement<\/a><\/span>. The first choice, <strong>RING OF FEAR<\/strong>, is a 1954 <strong>Warner Bros.<\/strong> release starring world famous animal trainer <strong>Clyde Beatty<\/strong> and celebrated crime fiction author <strong>Mickey Spillane<\/strong> as themselves in a circus-set murder mystery. Also appearing in the <strong>CinemaScope<\/strong> production are numerous real-life big top performers of yore, including area native <strong>Richard Shipley<\/strong>, who had lived in those other Twin Cities at some point; the Bloomington-<strong>Normal<\/strong> area once served as a \u201cwinter camp\u201d destination for traveling circuses during the first half of the 20th century. Other than presenting <strong>RING OF FEAR <\/strong>to their audience in a new light as a cultural time capsule laced with local threads, organizers arranged for rare artifacts from the unique \u201c<strong>Circus and Allied Arts<\/strong>\u201d collection housed at ISU to be on display for everyone to enjoy. Given our own editorial leanings that stress the worth of the past in the present, we can\u2019t help but approve of this direction charted by the museum! Happily, their education outreach coordinator <strong>Anthony Bowman<\/strong> confirmed for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong><\/span> via e-mail the series would pick up in the fall, thanks to the enthusiastic response elicited by the <strong>RING OF FEAR<\/strong> event.
