So, to get <em>some<\/em> value out of this particular \u201c<strong>FOW<\/strong>,\u201d we start by giving overdue props to whomever schedules the multiplexes for bringing in a steady slate of overseas entertainments that previously might have gone straight to video in America. Monthly <strong>Bollywood<\/strong> awaits <strong>Indian<\/strong> audiences at the <strong>Carmike 13<\/strong> to the north in <strong>Champaign<\/strong> while Asian communities can see films from<strong> Japan, Korea, China<\/strong>, and <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong> on the regular at the <strong>Goodrich Savoy 16<\/strong> to the south in <strong>Savoy<\/strong>. As an example, on <strong>7\/29<\/strong> the latter will open <strong>LEAGUE OF GODS<\/strong> (<strong>Sony Pictures Releasing International<\/strong>), a sumptuous looking epic directed by <strong>Koan Hui<\/strong> that is based on 16th century folklore filled with warlords, armies, swordsmen, monsters, spirits, and ragtag heroes; genre legends<strong> Jet Li<\/strong> and <strong>Tony Leung<\/strong> appear with popular China\/HK stars <strong>Bingbing Fan, Xiaoming Huang, Louis Koo<\/strong>, and <strong>Angelababy<\/strong> in what will either be regarded as a refreshing alternative to the CGI spectaculars manufactured by <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> or merely another entry in the global fantasy film sweepstakes. Whatever its quality,<strong> LEAGUE OF GODS<\/strong> has the potential to go largely unseen in its limited release \u2013 Savoy 16 is one of only 54 domestic theaters to carry it this coming week; is Sony now gun shy thanks to their mishandling of <strong>Stephen Chow<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>THE MERMAID<\/strong> earlier this year? \u2013 and we feel it is our cinematic duty to suggest you give it a chance. As peculiar incentive, we bestow our C-U seal of approval for the first time not on the film itself but a <em>character<\/em> in it that can only exist \u201cat the movies,\u201d a terrifically gonzo child warrior named \u201c<strong>Baby Nezha<\/strong>\u201d who <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"WATCH: China\u2019s \u2018League of Gods\u201d Trailer Has the Butt-Kicking Baby You\u2019ve Dreamed Of :: Comic Book Resources\" href=\"http:\/\/spinoff.comicbookresources.com\/2016\/07\/13\/watch-chinas-league-of-gods-trailer-has-the-butt-kicking-baby-youve-dreamed-of\/\" target=\"_blank\">steals the spotlight in various Internet coverage<\/a><\/span>. Designed and executed by stateside effects firm <strong>Tippett Studios<\/strong> for the producers, <strong>China Star Entertainment Group<\/strong>, Nezha aids the band of rogue protectors who are tasked with restoring order to the Middle Kingdom with his magic powers; <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"League of Gods \u2013 Introducing Baby Nezha! :: Tippett Studios @ Vimeo\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/174749011\" target=\"_blank\">watch this <strong>Vimeo<\/strong> reel<\/a><\/span> for a sample of the mite\u2019s offbeat might! We also have an honorable mention du C-U to hand out, but we need to reach across faraway lands (and very, <em>very<\/em> high off the ground) to salute another uniquely Eastern creation that is the sheer antithesis to heroic and roly-poly little Nezha \u2013 the mountainous, gnarled, borderline grotesque rendition of the King of the Monsters to be found in <strong>SHIN GOJIRA<\/strong> (<strong>Toho Co., Ltd.<\/strong>), now playing more than 400 theaters in Japan as of<strong> 7\/29<\/strong>. We will be given the chance to witness<strong> SHIN GODZILLA<\/strong> (<strong>Funimation Films<\/strong>) in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Exclusive! Funimation Licenses GODZILLA RESURGENCE :: SciFi Japan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scifijapan.com\/articles\/2016\/07\/21\/exclusive-funimation-licenses-godzilla-resurgence\/\" target=\"_blank\">limited release later this year<\/a><\/span> and decide for ourselves whether the apparently radical path taken by co-directors <strong>Hideaki Anno<\/strong> and <strong>Shinji Higuchi<\/strong> has been worth the year-long wait. Unless Ye Ed forgets to go, of course.
