25 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 July 1-15, 1991:<\/em> Location shooting for the big-screen biography of legendary baseball player George \u201cBabe\u201d Ruth<\/strong>, aptly titled THE BABE<\/strong>, takes place at Danville Stadium<\/strong> on the south end of Danville, IL<\/strong>. Led by director Arthur Hiller<\/strong>, the production crew redresses the home of the Danville Dans<\/strong> club to alternately resemble Fenway Park<\/strong> of Boston<\/strong> and the defunct Forbes Field<\/strong> of Pittsburgh<\/strong> for scenes in the film; some shots are eventually augmented with early CGI effects to extend the upper decks and fill the stands not populated with flesh-and-blood extras recruited from the immediate area. Hollywood<\/strong> actors who are on hand to perform include Bruce Boxleitner, Kelly McGillis<\/strong>, and star John Goodman<\/strong>. Universal Pictures<\/strong> would release THE BABE<\/strong> on Friday, April 17, 1992<\/strong>, to more than 1,500 screens in North America<\/strong>. Considering that last week\u2019s \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d was unexpectedly involved and next week\u2019s \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d is threatening to achieve epic status, we\u2019re keeping this week\u2019s critical elucidation on point. If a disarmingly humorous and sporadically vulgar movie caper is what you seek, then might we suggest the one that is not<\/em> in theaters everywhere \u2013 the \u201cthug life\u201d send-up KEANU<\/strong> (New Line Cinema\/Warner Home Video<\/strong>) starring Keegan-Michael Key<\/strong> and Jordan Peele<\/strong> and directed by Peter Atencio<\/strong>, all formerly of the KEY & PEELE<\/strong> show on Comedy Central<\/strong>. We have generally liked what we\u2019ve seen of the duo on the small screen, while previews for the feature have promised a few wild laughs if nothing particularly cutting or deep, so this could be what cures your summertime blues. A bonus \u201cWTF\u201d goes out to all the quick-to-condemn film critics, even-quicker-to-bite-back fan base, and not-exactly-quick-witted filmmakers and studio who together are making SUICIDE SQUAD<\/strong> (Warner Bros.<\/strong>) a losing proposition in the superhero and pop culture sweepstakes even if it makes bank. Communicate much, media consumers? Yikes<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n
