The twist with the UI Krannert Center for the Performing Arts presentation of THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE (Sony Pictures Classics) is that Benoȋt Charest, who composed the score for director Sylvian Chomet’s charming adventure in which three eccentric elder ladies aid a fourth in rescuing the latter’s grandson from the mafia during the Tour de France, will conduct the performance himself with a touring combo, Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville. This “cine-concert” is to be staged in the Urbana complex’s Colwell Playhouse next week on Thurs., 9/15, and Fri., 9/16, starting at 7:30 p.m. and followed by talkback sessions with the musicians. From the novel revival of TRIPLETS, originally released stateside in 2003, we move to the “celluloid atrocity” MULTIPLE MANIACS (Criterion Collection/Janus Films), an early John Waters opus from 1970 that has never received theatrical distribution until now. Offering the unsuspecting world an early (dis)taste of both the legend-to-be that was Divine and the filmmaker’s trademark veneer of gleeful filth, MANIACS depicts in gloriously cheapo monochrome the misadventures of cheeky cretins operating as the “Cavalcade of Perversion” before crime, infidelity, and murder threatens to derail their scheme. The Art Theater Co-op likewise threatens the very fabric of downtown Champaign’s existence by uncorking this restored relic of raunch at 10 p.m. shows on Fri., 9/9, Sat., 9/10, and Thurs, 9/15.
