A way-above-par wartime duo returns to the area for one-day-only reprises, giving us the opportunity to score a double Bogie in big screen entertainment! It begins with CASABLANCA<\/strong> (Warner Bros.<\/strong>) at the Virginia Theatre<\/strong> in Champaign<\/strong> tomorrow, Sat., 9\/17, 1<\/strong> and 7 p.m.<\/strong>, as this month\u2019s entry in the News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> sponsored classic film series. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman<\/strong>, and Paul Henreid<\/strong> headline this oft-cited tale of lost love and international intrigue set primarily at a hopping nightclub in the Moroccan city of Casablanca<\/strong>, shrouded by the looming specter of Nazism. Directed by Michael Curtiz<\/strong>, CASABLANCA<\/strong> is as much a touchstone of the Hollywood<\/strong> \u201cGolden Era\u201d as is THE MALTESE FALCON<\/strong> (Warner Bros.<\/strong>), which plays the Normal Theater<\/strong> in Normal<\/strong> on Wed., 9\/21, 7 p.m.<\/strong>, as the first selection of a \u201cSix Week Film School\u201d focusing on film noir<\/em><\/a><\/span>. John Huston<\/strong> made his directorial debut with this crackling mystery, starring Bogart as private eye Sam Spade from the Dashiell Hammett<\/strong> pulp stories along with Mary Astor, Gladys George, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet<\/strong>, and \u201cthe black bird,\u201d an iconic cinema MacGuffin if there ever was one; distinctive character actors Greenstreet and Lorre also appeared in CASABLANCA<\/strong> the following year. Coincidentally, a repackage of vintage favorites released this past Tues., 9\/13<\/strong>, \u201cBogart & Bacall: 6-Film Collection<\/strong>\u201d (Warner Bros. Video<\/strong>), bundles FALCON<\/strong> with a quartet famously pairing the hangdog actor and leading lady Lauren Bacall<\/strong> \u2013 TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, THE BIG SLEEP, DARK PASSAGE<\/strong>, and KEY LARGO<\/strong> \u2013 as well as the Bacall-Gregory Peck<\/strong> comedy DESIGNING WOMAN<\/strong>. \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d is hereby fin<\/em> … even though, a fin<\/em> is just a fin<\/em>.<\/p>\n
