CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n

10 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 Saturday, October 28, 2006:<\/em> Opteryx Press<\/strong> of Champaign<\/strong> hosts a \u201cMICRO-FILM Movie Show<\/strong>\u201d of low-budget horror cinema for Halloween<\/strong> including DRAWING BLOOD<\/strong>, directed by the Wolinski Brothers<\/strong>, and SEX MACHINE<\/strong>, directed by Christopher Sharpe<\/strong>, in the upper level of Mike \u2018n Molly\u2019s<\/strong> in downtown Champaign. This is their fourth screening of the year<\/a><\/span> at the popular bar, all curated and hosted by editor\/publisher Jason Pankoke<\/strong>, and also the last standalone MF<\/strong> event to date.<\/p>\n

FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sure, we could<\/em> have just taken a little NAFF<\/strong> and coasted on trumpeting our own event in this space, but that would have been a bit disingenuous. We\u2019ll instead keep it short and sweet in picking the best of the rest! An acclaimed Swedish drama with both empathy and bite, A MAN CALLED OVE<\/strong> (Music Box Films<\/strong>), is directed by Hannes Holm<\/strong> and stars Rolf Lassg\u00e5rd<\/strong> in the title role as a stern widower who unexpectedly warms to new neighbors; it returns to the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> for a one-week split run with Mick Jackson<\/strong>\u2019s DENIAL<\/strong> (Bleecker Street<\/strong>) starting tonight, Fri., 10\/28<\/strong>. Also showing this evening is the locally-made documentary THE PHOENIX: HOPE IS RISING*<\/strong> (Center Street Productions<\/strong>), which covers the last-minute move of the Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center<\/strong> for the homeless to 34 E. Green St., Champaign<\/strong>, from its now-demolished Neil St. location; a talk about the plight of these individuals served by the Phoenix will follow the free 6 p.m.<\/strong> screening at the Stratford Park Bible Chapel, 2801 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign<\/strong>. Lastly and certainly beastly, we revisit THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW<\/strong> (20th Century Fox<\/strong>) to point out additional dates we neglected to share in the prior \u201cFOW<\/strong>.\u201d Students from Lincoln College<\/strong> will perform alongside ROCKY<\/strong> at the Lincoln Grand 8<\/strong> in Lincoln<\/strong> tomorrow, Sat., 10\/29<\/strong>, at 10:30 p.m.<\/strong>, while the Effingham Performance Center<\/strong> in Effingham<\/strong> offers customers a complimentary goodie bag but no dancing troupe for its own 10 p.m.<\/strong> show, also on Sat., 10\/29<\/strong>. Dr. Scott! Rocky! \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d is hereby fin!<\/em><\/p>\n
