FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts<\/strong><\/p>\n

It almost feels de rigueur<\/em> that we work Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> fare into this section of the Calendar<\/strong> nearly every week, yet we can\u2019t help but acknowledge their consistency in booking the most interesting viewing choices. Case in point this<\/em> time is the critically-lauded MOONLIGHT<\/strong> (A24 Films<\/strong>), directed by Barry Jenkins<\/strong> and starring Trevante Rhodes, Andr\u00e9 Holland, Janelle Mon\u00e1e, Mahershala Ali<\/strong>, and Naomie Harris<\/strong> in the gently mesmerizing story of a Miami<\/strong> youth who must navigate hardships, crime, and uncertain sexuality as he comes of age. Set in the recent past and told in three chapters, the beautifully-made drama reflects a complex reality for African-Americans that is not typically seen in contemporary films and may provide audiences across the board with a necessary jolt of perspective and empathy post-Election Day<\/strong>. Since MOONLIGHT<\/strong> will illuminate the Art for at least the next two weeks beginning today, Fri., 11\/11<\/strong>, you can also clear a few moments for our other selections that qualify as \u201cshort run\u201d and \u201coffbeat.\u201d We think the aesthetic qualities and historic value of DOCTOR WHO: THE POWER OF THE DALEKS<\/strong> (Fathom Events\/BBC Worldwide<\/strong>), which plays the Goodrich Savoy 16<\/strong> on Mon., 11\/14<\/strong>, at 7 p.m.<\/strong>, will supersede any hesitations one might have for spending good money on what amounts to a \u201cvery special episode\u201d of a television series. More than 40 years after destroying the master elements of the six-episode arc \u201cThe Power of the Daleks<\/strong>,\u201d which aired during the 1966 season of DOCTOR WHO<\/strong> and depicted the first regeneration of the Doctor from a grandfatherly type (William Hartnell<\/strong>) to a younger and more puckish guise (Patrick Troughton<\/strong>), the BBC<\/strong> has used ephemera such as stills and surviving audio tracks to retell the adventure as a feature-length animated movie! This presentation will include new and vintage interviews that will presumably address the creative path to rescuing \u201cPower\u201d from permanent extermination. On campus, the Penny Dreadful Players<\/strong> student theater group at the University of Illinois<\/strong> will stage an Obie Award<\/strong>– and Pulitzer Prize<\/strong>-winning play, The Flick<\/strong><\/span> by Annie Baker<\/strong>, at the Channing-Murray Foundation<\/strong> in Urbana<\/strong> at 7:30 p.m.<\/strong> both tonight, Fri., 11\/11<\/strong>, and tomorrow, Sat., 11\/12<\/strong>. First performed off-Broadway<\/strong> in 2013, the acclaimed character study involves a series of encounters and observations between employees of a run-down Massachusetts<\/strong> movie theater in line for a digital upgrade. Criticisms have touched on the often defeatist tone of the material, a relative lack of action or plot progression, and a two-act structure that somehow warrants a three-hour running time, so you have been warned if slow-burn introspection is not your bag. Attendees can judge if director Jon Murphy<\/strong> and his company pull off enough compelling moments to make the time investment and $7 ticket price worthwhile. \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d is hereby fin<\/em> and almost qualifies as an anagram of \u201cWHO,\u201d but<\/em>, not really.<\/p>\n
