If you have a pre-Xmas road trip in you, consider attending the \u201c<strong>Best of the Midwest Awards<\/strong>\u201d at the <strong>Rockit Bar &amp; Grill, 22 W. Hubbard St., Chicago<\/strong>, starting at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> on <strong>Tues., 12\/6<\/strong>; the annual ceremony gives props to the cream of the indie crop produced in the <strong>Flyover Zone<\/strong> and is organized by the folks behind the <strong>Midwest Independent Film Festival<\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Best of the Midwest Awards 2016 :: Midwest Independent Film Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/www.midwestfilm.com\/pages\/now_showing_\/403.php\" target=\"_blank\">You may not yet know the films<\/a><\/span>, but any producer worth their salt can potentially gain mileage out of putting in the miles to hit the BMAs for some big-city networking! Runner-up attraction is a rare booking of the <strong>Japanese<\/strong> <em>anime<\/em> classic <strong>AKIRA<\/strong> (<strong>Funimation Films<\/strong>), which will play a handful of late-night shows at the <strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> beginning tonight at <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong> The innovative science fiction\/political uprising\/body horror epic from 1988 is directed by <strong>Katsuhiro Otomo<\/strong>, based on his own sprawling <em>manga<\/em> series, and involves a brash street teenager named Tetsuo whose psychic powers are inadvertently magnified to catastrophic proportions in an already devastated <strong>Tokyo<\/strong>.
