FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts<\/strong><\/p>\n

This<\/em> week feels like a leftovers week to us \u2013 only one wide release, the exorcism yarn INCARNATE<\/strong>, opens today, Fri., 12\/2<\/strong>, and it looks to be a turkey-in-the-making \u2013 so we\u2019re pointing you in two constructive directions and calling it a Calendar<\/strong>. If you have a pre-Xmas road trip in you, consider attending the \u201cBest of the Midwest Awards<\/strong>\u201d at the Rockit Bar & Grill, 22 W. Hubbard St., Chicago<\/strong>, starting at 7 p.m.<\/strong> on Tues., 12\/6<\/strong>; the annual ceremony gives props to the cream of the indie crop produced in the Flyover Zone<\/strong> and is organized by the folks behind the Midwest Independent Film Festival<\/strong>. You may not yet know the films<\/a><\/span>, but any producer worth their salt can potentially gain mileage out of putting in the miles to hit the BMAs for some big-city networking! Runner-up attraction is a rare booking of the Japanese<\/strong> anime<\/em> classic AKIRA<\/strong> (Funimation Films<\/strong>), which will play a handful of late-night shows at the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> beginning tonight at 10 p.m.<\/strong> The innovative science fiction\/political uprising\/body horror epic from 1988 is directed by Katsuhiro Otomo<\/strong>, based on his own sprawling manga<\/em> series, and involves a brash street teenager named Tetsuo whose psychic powers are inadvertently magnified to catastrophic proportions in an already devastated Tokyo<\/strong>. Not surprisingly, AKIRA<\/strong> is the perfect \u201cbang\u201d to kick off a short run of future-shock thrillers in the coming weeks \u2013 because, you know, the impending Trumpocalypse \u2013 that will include CHILDREN OF MEN<\/strong> and the \u201cBlack & Chrome Edition\u201d of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD<\/strong>. \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d is hereby fin<\/em> and, hopefully, we are not.<\/p>\n
