SNAKE\u2019S BIG ADVENTURE, Pens to Lens 2016)<br \/>\n12\/22: Erin Barkley (acquisitions, Go Retro)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even if <strong>ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY<\/strong> truly earns every last cent it will otherwise vacuum out of our pockets and bank accounts this winter, we would rather bet our bottom dollar on a few alternate attractions in this week\u2019s <strong>Calendar<\/strong> that are quite capable of besting that CGI wizardry with old-fashioned movie magic. <strong>The Normal Theater<\/strong> returns to <strong>Tim Burton<\/strong> territory with the maligned stylist\u2019s 1990 masterpiece, <strong>EDWARD SCISSORHANDS<\/strong> (<strong>20th Century Fox<\/strong>), later tonight, <strong>Fri., 12\/16, 10:30 p.m.<\/strong>; <strong>Johnny Depp<\/strong> sweetly portrays the creation of a scientist (<strong>Vincent Price<\/strong>) who is all buckles, leather, blade hands, and <strong>Robert Smith<\/strong> rat\u2019s nest, an inspired screen protagonist partly brought to gothic-romantic life by <strong>Ve Neill<\/strong> and<strong> Stan Winston<\/strong>\u2019s make-up artistry and <strong>Colleen Atwood<\/strong>\u2019s costume design. The Normal and the <strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> also revisit what seems to be the preferred Muppet movie from the immediate area following <strong>Jim Henson<\/strong>\u2019s passing, <strong>THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL<\/strong> (<strong>Walt Disney Pictures<\/strong>), a wry and heartfelt 1992 rendition of <strong>Charles Dickens<\/strong>\u2019 timeless tale of redemption. <strong>Brian Henson<\/strong> ably stepped in for his father to direct the great <strong>Michael Caine<\/strong> as Ebenezer Scrooge alongside the well-loved menagerie of felt-and-plastic-and-mechanical creatures (and their invisible human puppeteers) in amazing soundstage sets depicting 19th century <strong>London<\/strong>; it plays on<strong> Sat., 12\/17<\/strong>, and <strong>Sun., 12\/18<\/strong>, at both venues, <strong>11:30 a.m.<\/strong> at the Art and <strong>1 p.m.<\/strong> at the Normal. On a more adults-only plane, the Art brings back <strong>George Miller<\/strong>\u2019s triumphant post-apocalyptic encore, <strong>MAD MAX: FURY ROAD<\/strong> (<strong>Warner Bros.<\/strong>), in his fabled monochrome print that should do nothing to diminish its incredible physical effects and stunt work created on location in <strong>Nambia, Africa<\/strong>; you can relive the adventures of Max (<strong>Tom Hardy<\/strong>), Imperator Furiosa (<strong>Charlize Theron<\/strong>), and their road-weary allies and adversaries at <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong> on <strong>Weds., 12\/21<\/strong>, and <strong>Thurs., 12\/22<\/strong>, as well as during tonight\u2019s allegedly cathartic <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong> event \u201c<strong>Fuck You 2016!<\/strong>\u201d when \u201c30 minutes of specially-selected clips\u201d will be shown prior to the feature.
