FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two more acclaimed small-scale films with big heart and hefty ideas begin play in wide release this weekend. FENCES<\/strong> (Paramount Pictures<\/strong>), a Fifties-set drama about a Pittsburgh<\/strong> sanitation worker who attempts to relive his dream of playing professional baseball to dire effect, stars Viola Davis<\/strong> and Denzel Washington<\/strong> and is directed by the latter from a screenplay by famed playwright August Wilson<\/strong>; Carmike 13<\/strong> opens it on Sat., 12\/24<\/strong>, while Goodrich Savoy 16<\/strong> starts its run on Sun., 12\/25<\/strong>. Also making its debut at Savoy today, Fri., 12\/23<\/strong>, is LA LA LAND<\/strong> (Summit Entertainment\/Lionsgate<\/strong>), a modern-day Los Angeles<\/strong> story staged like an old-fashioned musical that is directed by Damien Chazelle<\/strong> and headlined by Ryan Gosling<\/strong> and Emma Stone<\/strong> as aspiring performing artists. Otherwise, you can either take in a reprise of MOONLIGHT<\/strong> (A24 Films<\/strong>) at the Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> (see the dates below) or have forgiven your sins of excess Thanksgiving<\/strong> television and ROGUE ONE<\/strong> outings by turning it all off and spending time with family and friends, as you should. \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d is hereby fin<\/em>.<\/p>\n
