Let\u2019s think outside the glowing rectangular box for a few moments, folks. Instead of settling for some average everyday viewing this week, why not redirect that effort towards catching up with the on-line cinema journalism you trust, picking up a new book about your most admired actor or director or production or studio or era, leafing through a periodical purchase that is angled on your favorite genre or franchise or movie-making technique, or all of the above? Even better, why not go pull those back issues of C-U Confidential<\/strong><\/span> digest we know you secretly harbor and get refreshed on how the motion picture has positively impacted our communities? As we enter the year of our digest\u2019s 10th anniversary and our editorial focus begins a shift from the timely to the archival, we will be impressing on the citizens and academic transients of Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond to increase their CUZine<\/strong><\/span> interaction because right now<\/em> would be a very good time for it.<\/a><\/span> Elsewhere, you have probably joined fans worldwide in mourning the consecutive deaths this past Mon., 12\/27<\/strong>, and Tues., 12\/28<\/strong>, of actor-author-wit Carrie Fisher<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (1956-2016) and Hollywood<\/strong> entertainment icon Debbie Reynolds<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (1932-2016); to help settle your heartbreak, it might do you well to sample their plentiful bodies of work in film, television, albums, publications, and so forth, much of which you probably haven\u2019t touched outside of STAR WARS<\/strong> or SINGIN\u2019 IN THE RAIN<\/strong>. Two documentary specials that mix stage performance with candid behind-the-scenes material will play on HBO<\/strong> in the coming weeks: WISHFUL DRINKING<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (2010), a taping of Fisher\u2019s one-woman show of the same name, is set to air on Sun., Jan. 1, 8 p.m. CST<\/strong>, while BRIGHT LIGHTS: STARRING CARRIE FISHER AND DEBBIE REYNOLDS<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (2016), bumped up from the March schedule to premiere on Sat., Jan. 7, 7 p.m. CST<\/strong>, captures Reynolds\u2019 final public performances and delves into their atypical mother-daughter relationship. If you must go to a movie house near you, the Virginia Theatre<\/strong> will resume their \u201cfamous filmmaker\u201d Reel Deal<\/strong> series next week with features directed by one or the other from another esteemed Tinseltown<\/strong> family, Francis Ford Coppola<\/strong> and Sofia Coppola<\/strong>. The latter\u2019s 2000 debut, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES<\/strong> (American Zoetrope\/Paramount Classics<\/strong>), launches the set on Tues., 1\/3<\/strong>, and Thurs., 1\/5<\/strong>, at 7 p.m.<\/strong>, to be followed by APOCALYPSE NOW<\/strong> (1\/10, 1\/12, 7 p.m.<\/strong>), LOST IN TRANSLATION<\/strong> (1\/17, 1\/19, 7 p.m.<\/strong>), and THE GODFATHER<\/strong> (1\/24, 1\/26, 7 p.m.<\/strong>). \u201cFOW<\/strong>\u201d is hereby fin<\/em>.<\/p>\n
