All Rights Reserved.)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_informant_moviehouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Those who pay attention to the relationship between movies and dollar signs already know <strong>THE INFORMANT!<\/strong> placed second on the list of top earners during the <strong>September 18-20<\/strong> \u201cframe\u201d (per <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Variety<\/span><\/strong> slang), <a title=\"CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS wins weekend boxoffice :: Variety\" href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1118008880.html?categoryid=1082&amp;cs=1\" target=\"_blank\">trailing smash hit <strong>CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS<\/strong> by almost $20 million<\/a>. However, the $14 million in <strong>INFORMANT!<\/strong> ticket sales during its first week, according to <a title=\"Domestic Weekly Box Office Report ending 09\/24\/09 :: Variety\" href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/index.asp?layout=boWeekly&amp;sort=weekly_revenue&amp;date=09%2F24%2F09&amp;submit.x=9&amp;submit.y=13&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">this <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Variety<\/span> box office chart<\/a>, bodes well enough that the movie will earn back its reported $22 million production cost and then some \u2013 even though <strong>C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> swears that earlier press claimed it cost $30-35 million. We&#8217;ll see how things go now that <strong>SURROGATES, FAME, PANDORUM<\/strong>, and other new titles have appeared in the &#8216;plexes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>In related observations, the dramatization of <strong>Mark Whitacre<\/strong>\u2019s story earned more in a single weekend than Whitacre himself embezzled from <strong>Archer Daniels Midland <\/strong>(ADM) during several years\u2019 worth of corporate skullduggery in the Nineties.<\/em> <em>Just sayin.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Elsewhere, the esteemed <strong>Skip Huston <\/strong>of the <strong><a title=\"The Avon Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theavon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Avon Theater<\/a> <\/strong>in <strong>Decatur <\/strong>confirmed through his e-newsletter that <strong>THE INFORMANT!<\/strong> helped break the record for overall highest grossing weekend and claimed the best and second-best grossing single shows (apart from special event screenings) since the venerable movie house reopened 10 years ago. The Avon also placed in the top five venues in the state of Illinois for <strong>INFORMANT!<\/strong> ticket sales. Huston makes a valid point, as did <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Decatur Herald &amp; Review<\/span><\/strong> columnist <strong>Tim Cain <\/strong>many months ago, that <strong>INFORMANT!<\/strong> is about a crazy incident that took place in Decatur and not necessarily, per his words, \u201cthe Decatur story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>In related observations, Huston also plugs the Avon\u2019s gourmet popcorn which he says\u00a0is popped using \u201chealthy Sunflower oil\u201d processed by \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 ADM, which is to Decatur what the <strong>University of Illinois <\/strong>is to <strong>Urbana-Champaign<\/strong>, as well as what <strong>State Farm Insurance<\/strong> and <strong>Illinois State University<\/strong> are to <strong>Bloomington-Normal <\/strong>\u2026 local institutions with<\/em> very <em>deep roots in the soil.<\/em> <em>Just sayin.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Moving on, <strong>CUBlog <\/strong>found numerous on-line comments whereas their authors felt it curious that <strong>Warner Bros.<\/strong> seemed to be giving <strong>THE INFORMANT!<\/strong> less than an ideal push, apart from the attention attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=1040\" target=\"_self\">that rascally trailer<\/a>. It hardly means people were not anticipating its release. For instance, your humble editor wiled away some late Friday hours last week at Champaign\u2019s <strong>Caf\u00e9 Kopi<\/strong> reading several entertainment sections, including pretty good-to-great <strong>INFORMANT!<\/strong> reviews by <a title=\"THE INFORMANT! review :: Chicago Tribune\" href=\"http:\/\/featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com\/talking_pictures\/2009\/09\/the-informant-3-12-stars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Michael Phillips <\/strong>of the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chicago Tribune<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"THE INFORMANT! review :: The New York Times\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/18\/movies\/18informant.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Manohla Dargis <\/strong>of the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">New York Times<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"THE INFORMANT! review :: USA Today\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/life\/movies\/reviews\/2009-09-17-the-informant_N.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Claudia Puig <\/strong>of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">USA Today<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, and <a title=\"THE INFORMANT! review ;: Chicago Sun-Times\" href=\"http:\/\/rogerebert.suntimes.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20090916\/REVIEWS\/909169998\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Roger Ebert <\/strong>of the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chicago Sun-Times<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>In related observations, I<\/em> do <em>love the smell of papers in the evening.
