Jones (pop artist, epyon5)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Quality international cinema comes to town in abbreviated lengths this week as compilations of the <strong>2017 Oscar-Nominated Short Films<\/strong> (<strong>ShortsHD\/Magnolia Pictures<\/strong>) arrive at the <strong>Art Theater Co-op<\/strong> and <strong>Normal Theater<\/strong>. Eighteen pieces total will be presented between the showcases \u2013 one each for \u201cLive Action,\u201d \u201cAnimation,\u201d and \u201cDocumentary\u201d at the Normal, four at the Art with the \u201cDocumentary\u201d set split in two \u2013 including the five in contention for each category and three runners-up added to \u201cAnimation.\u201d Plenty of hard information and high-resolution images <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"2017 Oscar-Nominated Short Films :: ShortsTV\" href=\"http:\/\/shorts.tv\/theoscarshorts\/\" target=\"_blank\">can be found at this Web page<\/a><\/span> if you would like to take in some background before a viewing. We\u2019ve labeled the distinct groupings for your convenience in the <strong>Calendar<\/strong>, but note the Art is rotating them every day from<strong> Fri., 2\/10<\/strong>, to <strong>Thurs., 2\/16<\/strong>, while the Normal is offering \u201cLive Action\u201d (<strong>Fri., 2\/10<\/strong>) and \u201cDocumentary\u201d (<strong>Sun., 2\/12<\/strong>) only once and \u201cAnimation\u201d (<strong>Sat., 2\/11; Thurs., 2\/16<\/strong>) twice, all at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> Also conjuring interest in our corner is the belated local appearance of <strong>THE LOVE WITCH<\/strong> (<strong>Oscilloscope Laboratories<\/strong>) at the Normal tonight, <strong>Fri., 2\/10<\/strong>, and tomorrow, <strong>Sat, 2\/11<\/strong>, at <strong>10 p.m.<\/strong>; cut from the same lovingly-crafted cloth as <strong>Anna Biller<\/strong>\u2019s previous short subjects and debut feature, <strong>VIVA<\/strong>, this <strong>WITCH<\/strong> echoes with precision a past <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> trope \u2013 the mid-century <strong>Technicolor<\/strong> melodrama \u2013 while twisting genre expectations and gender politics to meet its ends. Shot in 35mm, the tale involves practicing witch Elaine (<strong>Samantha Robinson<\/strong>) and her attempts to lure with \u201csex magic\u201d a male companion who might handle her highly particular (and occasionally fatal) wiles.
