(You will understand shortly why we felt the need to designate this event as \u201c<strong>Flicker of the Week<\/strong>\u201d despite <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Dance\u2019 to be last FOW, FWIW :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=10779\" target=\"_blank\">hanging up the critic\u2019s cap.<\/a><\/span>) Our do-it-yourself culture confidant <strong>David Gracon<\/strong> has finally brought his <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Hallways Microcinema @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/564445583638716\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Hallways Microcinema<\/strong><\/a><\/span> series out into the open with <strong>Vol. 19<\/strong> taking place this <strong>Sunday, April 9, 7:30 p.m.<\/strong>, at the <strong>Art Theater Co-op, 126 W. Church St., Champaign<\/strong>. Local improvisational quartet <strong>SUNSAT IV <\/strong>opens with a mini-concert after which Hallways will present a new documentary on the nonconformist media icon <strong>Tony Conrad<\/strong>, who <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Tony Conrad, Experimental Filmmaker and Musician, Dies at 76 :: The New York Times\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/10\/arts\/artsspecial\/tony-conrad-experimental-filmmaker-and-musician-dies-at-76.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">passed away on the same date a year ago<\/a><\/span> at age 76.<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"TONY CONRAD: COMPLETELY IN THE PRESENT :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tonyconradmovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> Tyler Hubby<\/strong>\u2019s film<\/a><\/span>, <strong>TONY CONRAD: COMPLETELY IN THE PRESENT<\/strong>, spans his life and career to explore a \u201cplayfully radical approach to art-making\u201d that encompassed a true passion for blasting through established genres, formats, and pretensions. His signature experimental film,<strong> THE FLICKER<\/strong> (1966), is a black-and-white minimalist journey while his most famous movie association, <strong>FLAMING CREATURES<\/strong> (1963), involved soundtrack contributions to the seminal <strong>Jack Smith<\/strong> short subject. Also opening this evening at <strong>6:30 p.m.<\/strong> is the Art\u2019s entry in the <strong>Boneyard Arts Festival<\/strong>, an exhibit featuring works by Art staff members <strong>Lainey Waugh<\/strong> and <strong>Jessie Seitz<\/strong>; the reception is free for the public although Hallways 19 will cost a reasonable $8 to attend. The <strong>TONY CONRAD<\/strong> preview embedded here does a good job teasing at Conrad\u2019s eclectic achievements in music composition, video production, university instruction, and overall lack of regard for the establishment. On the other hand, we simply could <em>not<\/em> pass on sharing the tongue-in-cheek(s) show flier below.
