It has always been a given that <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong> will never be able to wrangle all the potential topics in a timely-enough fashion to kick out timely-enough editorial. We don\u2019t have the staff or budget or time. (Will we ever?) That said, we <em>always<\/em> have interest and good intentions, dearest readers, so we simply must be alert during our virtual and physical wanderings in the event we stumble upon stories we miss in their original moments. If we do not receive advance warning in the form of a press release or some such, the community grapevine can be on the side of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong>; our <strong>Facebook<\/strong> contacts and strategic \u201clikes\u201d meant <a title=\"Shocktober Fest a lock for Oct. 3 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11517\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">we would learn about the new <strong>Shocktober Film Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/a> almost immediately, for instance. Elsewhere, our knack for putting the Twin Cities\u2019 two-and-two together can pay dividends if invested just right as with today\u2019s article.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although merely window shopping with his Web browser, your wide-awake humble editor cashed in with some late-night scouring of the home videos offered by on-line merchant <strong>Oldies.com<\/strong>. <a title=\"I HEARD THE DARKNESS @ Oldies.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oldies.com\/product-view\/1102D.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Here is where he noticed a rather vibrant DVD cover<\/span><\/a> that sported a subtitle familiar to him. Producer <strong>Tye Wilson<\/strong> and his company <strong>Broken Shadow Entertainment<\/strong> of downstate <strong>Taylorville<\/strong> had previously used it as the main title of their micro-budget epic. Could it be one and the same? Sure enough, we verified through research that <strong>I HEARD THE DARKNESS<\/strong> had finally been loosed upon the world as <strong>ZOMBIE ARMAGEDDON<\/strong> through the Oldies.com in-house label <strong>Alpha Video<\/strong> and its own sublabel for indie genre fare, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Alpha New Cinema :: Oldies.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oldies.com\/Alpha-New-Cinema\/collection.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Alpha New Cinema<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. First offered more than a year ago on <strong>Tuesday, September 27, 2016<\/strong>, the DVD-R includes a short film predecessor and making-of featurette, making it well worth the reasonable price.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"A space traveler explores in ABRAXIS. (Photo: Broken Shadow Entertainment)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_brokenshadow_abraxis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>DARKNESS<\/strong> is the commercial debut for a Broken Shadow narrative and follows the experience of a steadfast Army sergeant named Daniels (<strong>Allen Thatcher<\/strong>) and his men as they descend into a nightmare <strong>America<\/strong> overrun by a zombie plague and government machinations. Many Taylorville townsfolk helped Broken Shadow create this ambitious B-film over a period of several years in the <strong>Illinois<\/strong> wilds southwest of <strong>Decatur<\/strong>, <a title=\"Broken Shadow Entertainment @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Broken-Shadow-Entertainment-269290180905\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">documented generously on their official Facebook page<\/span><\/a>. While occasionally shaky in its performances and overall technique, <strong>DARKNESS<\/strong> moves like a monster and reminded <strong>Ye Ed<\/strong> of the bold abandon he used to witness in certain products of the late Nineties \u201cbackyard cinema\u201d boom, shepherded to select audiences via mail order by the likes of <strong>Tempe Video, Sub Rosa Studios, <a title=\"SMO knows the Left Coast outr\u00e9 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=8878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Film Threat Video<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, and <strong>EI Independent Cinema<\/strong>. \u201cLabor of love\u201d is a requisite line item for an under-the-radar flick like this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cIt was 2006 [when I began Broken Shadow] before I went to school in <strong>California<\/strong>,\u201d explains Wilson to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> during an IM exchange in January. \u201cMy first project was a feature-length slasher film I had written and directed before I really knew what I was doing \u2026 [I] made the film, learned a lot, and changed my major in college and my life [because of it].\u201d Remaining in Taylorville, he followed <strong>DARKNESS<\/strong> with several other ventures in various capacities including a series of horror shorts, a <a title=\"\u2018Abraxis Aesthetic Anaysis\u2019 research paper by Tye A.T. Wilson :: OpenSIUC\" href=\"http:\/\/opensiuc.lib.siu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1513&amp;context=gs_rp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">science fiction thesis film<\/span><\/a> called <strong>ABRAXIS<\/strong>, and most recently the Western drama <strong>TO KILL A KING: THE TRUE TESTAMENT OF THE GENTLEMAN JASPER PRICE<\/strong>. \u201cI am hatching plans to write and shoot a short film based on a feature film I have [also] written, which I have been submitting to competitions, and [then] hopefully shoot the feature,\u201d reveals the young filmmaker about his plans after a self-imposed break.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Loni Tucker stars in TO KILL A KING: THE TRUE TESTAMENT OF THE GENTLEMAN JASPER PRICE. (Photo: Broken Shadow Entertainment)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_brokenshadow_killkingA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Wilson spent his time developing the script and raising initial funds for that short, <strong>A MAN IN BLACK<\/strong>, while finishing <strong>TO KILL A KING<\/strong> and sliding into producing and acting roles for others, most notably director <strong>Matthew Packman<\/strong>\u2019s bleak \u201cpost-society\u201d feature <strong>MARGO<\/strong>. \u201cMatt is my closest colleague,\u201d Wilson confirms in regards to his involvement. \u201cI have had the pleasure of producing work for him and with him [as well as] acting for him. [<strong>MARGO<\/strong>] was shot in the very same manner and locations as we have always made films [using] <strong>Centralia<\/strong>, Taylorville, and <strong>Carbondale<\/strong> as main locations. It was completed and sent to the film festival circuit over a year ago, but just [landed] a distribution deal like <strong>DARKNESS<\/strong> did.\u201d <strong>BrinkVision<\/strong>, a sort of successor in spirit to the aforementioned labels, <a title=\"MARGO @ BrinkVision\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brinkvision.com\/filmdetails\/112\/margo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">began distributing <strong>MARGO<\/strong> on DVD and through <strong>Amazon Prime<\/strong><\/span><\/a> back on <strong>Tuesday, September 12<\/strong>, of last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We will keep tabs on Broken Shadow Entertainment as they progress. <strong>A MAN IN BLACK<\/strong> is intended to be paired with <strong>TO KILL A KING<\/strong> on an eventual DVD per Wilson, who also plans to participate in Packman\u2019s follow-up to <strong>MARGO<\/strong>. Looming in the background is the potential for the Big One, of course. \u201cI feel [<strong>A MAN IN BLACK<\/strong>] exploring a bit of that universe with some beloved surrealism [sic] is the best way to gain support for the feature,\u201d offers Wilson.
