Cunningham Avenue<\/strong> in <strong>Urbana<\/strong> to film her thesis project, <strong>OPEN TO CLOSE<\/strong>, much of their efforts taking place after business hours in the dead of night. Schmitt, a transplant to the area whose father helps run the restaurant, cast local talent to act in her short, which explores the strained relationship between budding moviemaker Rosie Powe (<strong>Gemma Wall<\/strong>) and her manager father Rob (<strong>Mark Alan Hudson<\/strong>) as they muscle through a hectic evening shift together. <strong>MICRO-FILM<\/strong> editor <strong>Jason Pankoke<\/strong> serves as a production assistant and set photographer during the shoot, the first of its kind that he either witnesses or takes part in as a <strong>Champaign<\/strong> resident. While her 16mm print most likely hit the closet shelf for good after grading, Schmitt has since <a title=\"Melissa Schmitt @ LinkedIn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/melissa-schmitt-11854222\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">built a career in social issue reporting<\/span><\/a> as a journalist and short-form content creator; she currently <a title=\"People :: Long Story Short Media\" href=\"https:\/\/lssmedia.com\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">works as a senior producer<\/span><\/a> for the <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, based firm <strong>Long Story Short Media<\/strong> and lives in <strong>Maryland<\/strong> with her family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>95 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 <em>July 23, 1923:<\/em> One of the earliest narrative films of scope made in <strong>Champaign County<\/strong>, <strong>THE CITY BEYOND<\/strong>, receives a world premiere at the <strong>Virginia Theatre<\/strong> in <strong>Champaign, IL<\/strong>, where it is paired with the <strong>First National Pictures<\/strong> release of <strong>PENROD AND SAM<\/strong>. Based on an idea formulated by the owners of the Virginia and the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong>, it is a relationship story spiced with aerial derring-do that is intended to \u201cbe a real picture of heart interest, produced by local stars with local settings\u201d as proposed by the newspaper in their <strong>June 17<\/strong> edition. Other articles have not been shy about admitting that its primary purpose is to creatively show off Champaign-Urbana in the best light. Prominent faces appearing on the silver screen at <strong>203 W. Park Avenue<\/strong> include <strong>Ruth Honn<\/strong> and <a title=\"\u2018Remembering Robeson\u2019s\u2019 by Cal Acosta :: Robeson\u2019s Inc.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.robesons.com\/remembering-robesons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Frank Robeson, Jr.<\/strong><\/a>, of Champaign as well as <strong>Elizabeth Boggs Bartling<\/strong> of Chicago, while such locations as <strong>West Side Park<\/strong>, the <a title=\"\u2018Frank Robeson Made Hero in Local Movie\u2019 :: The Daily Illini\" href=\"http:\/\/idnc.library.illinois.edu\/cgi-bin\/illinois?a=d&amp;d=DIL19230622&amp;e=-------en-20-DIL-1--txt-txIN-%22The+City+Beyond%22-------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Champaign County Country Club<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Chanute Air Force Base<\/strong> in <strong>Rantoul<\/strong>, and the Virginia itself can easily be identified in certain scenes. <strong>J. Law Siple<\/strong>, a <strong>Chicago<\/strong> entrepreneur and veteran producer of agricultural promotional reels, directed <strong>THE CITY BEYOND<\/strong> under the watchful eyes of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span> advertising manager <strong>E.C. Bleau<\/strong> and photographer <strong>Howard F. Duncan<\/strong>; they began production little more than a month ago, believe it or not! The picture would attract hundreds of area residents between its first showing on <strong>Monday, July 23<\/strong>, and last on <strong>Wednesday, July 25<\/strong>, before the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span> took possession of the print for storage. It is considered lost today.
