{"id":12074,"date":"2018-09-11T15:00:11","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T21:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12074"},"modified":"2018-09-15T13:26:39","modified_gmt":"2018-09-15T19:26:39","slug":"test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12074","title":{"rendered":"IFV offers UI students filming fun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ililni Film &amp; Video (Artwork: courtesy IFV)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_IFV_logo2018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"231\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We like to mark the occasion when the <a title=\"Illini Film &amp; Video :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/illinifilmandvideo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong> (IFV) student club<\/span><\/a> at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> gets underway each academic year in the hopes that young people will feel compelled to join in. It is a resource for budding media-makers whose tastes lean towards the comedy and drama of storytelling \u2013 that does <em>not<\/em> mean documentary, diary, nonlinear, or industrial are off limits \u2013 at a flagship university that, once again and always, has no film production track. UIUC undergraduates are the target audience for this organization, which met for the first time during the 2018-2019 frame last night, <strong>Monday, September 10<\/strong>, at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> in <strong>Room 1022<\/strong> of <strong>Lincoln Hall<\/strong>, and their organizing peers will give members room to practice with the process and express their ideas and problem-solving. It is usually not the only RSO of its kind on campus but it <em>is<\/em> the long-standing one; IFV will begin its third decade of activity in the near future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Students with little to no filmmaking under their belts are just as welcome to attend the weekly meetings as are graduate students with thesis projects in the works and campus employees with professional gigs on their plate. This year\u2019s officers, <strong>Saloni Nahar<\/strong> (president), <strong>Prashanth Vemuri<\/strong> (vice president), <strong>Kevin Konrath<\/strong> (secretary), <strong>Yanyi Xie<\/strong> (marketing director), <strong>Zhi Luo<\/strong> (outreach), <strong>Alex Gong<\/strong> (treasurer), <strong>John Carlson<\/strong> (equipment manager), and <strong>Deborah Agoye<\/strong> (web manager) can help in pointing out opportunities within and outside of IFV. That said, the club always attempts to provide a mix of events to encourage participation that may include hands-on workshops, guest speakers, challenges like the annual 48 hour contest, club fundraisers such as on-site taping at <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong>, <a title=\"Student fests to fill semester\u2019s end :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">student film showcases like the new <strong>Golden Corn Movie Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and C-U excursions to see movies and such.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ux_8Jl_yXPg\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We don\u2019t need to pitch the virtues and ever-brewing potential of IFV as <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018The RSO For Me: Illini Film &amp; Video\u2019 by Eric Mo :: Technology Entrepreneur Center, College of Engineering, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/tec.illinois.edu\/stories\/news\/23756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their officers are capable of the same<\/a><\/span>. What we <em>can<\/em> do is reiterate how amazing it is for this club to persist for nearly 20 years. We know from research that groups invested in cinema creation have run their course at UIUC from time to time. Two examples are <strong>Cinemaguild<\/strong>, whose B-film <strong>SHOT<\/strong> (1973) <a title=\"SHOT BD provides thud-filled rush :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">received a surprise Blu-ray release<\/span><\/a> last month, and the <strong>Illini Photo Players<\/strong>, a drama club whose <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Campus Life on the Silver Screen: The 1916 Film \u2018Pro Patria\u2019\u2019 by Anna Trammell :: Student Life and Culture Archives, University Library, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/slc\/pro-patria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filmed \u201cschool spirit\u201d film <strong>PRO PATRIA<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (1916) not only combined the efforts of students, faculty, and administrators but stands as the oldest (albeit lost) narrative <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> film that we know about. Their output provides us with time capsules today but the groups themselves only existed for brief periods during their prime. In comparison, IFV\u2019s prolific tenure is a singular achievement that we hope will never be taken for granted by the university or alumni.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Those interested in Illini Film &amp; Video or mentoring should write <strong>illinifilmandvideo [at] gmail [dot] com<\/strong> to be added to their mailing list.
