Balaban<\/strong> of <strong>Chicago<\/strong>. The <strong>Co-Ed Theater<\/strong>, located on <strong>Green Street<\/strong> within easy walking distance of the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> and an underserved campus population, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Co-Ed Theatre :: Cinema Treasures\" href=\"http:\/\/cinematreasures.org\/theaters\/5551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opens its doors this afternoon to host a full house for its grand opening show<\/a><\/span> that includes news reels, a <strong>Betty Boop<\/strong> cartoon, and the comedic <strong>First National\/Warner Bros.<\/strong> feature <strong>WOMEN ARE LIKE THAT<\/strong> starring <strong>Kay Francis<\/strong> and <strong>Pat O\u2019Brien<\/strong>. This venue differs from the existing Alger properties in that it is their first theater built from the ground up, despite incorporating basic infrastructure that was already present on the north side of the block between <strong>Sixth<\/strong> and <strong>Wright<\/strong> streets, and it will premiere the best in first-run fare while the others bring back second-run attractions \u201cat popular prices,\u201d <a title=\"\u2018The Art Theater\u2019 by Perry C. Morris, Joseph Muskin, and Audrey Wells :: Champaign-Urbana Theater History\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cutheaterhistory.com\/the-art-theater-playing-movies-for-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">as described in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Art Theater<\/span><\/strong> by <strong>Perry Morris<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <em>et al<\/em>. Chicago architectural firm <strong>Monberg &amp; Wagner<\/strong> drew up the plans to accommodate 900 seats in an Art Moderne setting, accented by UI-inspired plaques and an orange-and-blue lighting scheme, while the <strong>William C.F. Kuhne Company<\/strong> of <strong>Rantoul<\/strong> erected the structure <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Cited in \u2018The Co-Ed Theater(s)\u2019 by Billy Budd Vermillion and Magdalena Kuzniar, under \u2018The History of Cinema in Urbana-Champaign\u2019 menu :: UIUC Unit for Cinema Studies [archived by Wayback Machine]\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20011109052255\/http:\/\/www.uiuc.edu:80\/unit\/cinema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as detailed in numerous reports by the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Courier<\/span><\/strong> newspapers<\/a><\/span>.
