Since we <em>have<\/em> recognized the fact that <a title=\"And another NAFF bites the dust\u2026 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">our own film festival felt like a bust<\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Indie Art Con is non-starter in C-U :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our presence at a local art show was inconsequential<\/a><\/span>, let\u2019s go for the self-depreciating three-peat as we dare to revisit the elephant in the <strong>Secret <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span> Headquarters<\/strong>! You might have noticed that <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Confidential<\/span><\/strong> has not come out lately. We\u2019ve had material edited and visual assets collected for the oft-promised <strong>issue 10<\/strong> for many months and, after<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Ten spots add up to CUZine #10 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> two efforts in the past year to book advertisements<\/a><\/span> fell on mostly deaf ears, we have not felt a great desire to get right back to it. Of course, we\u2019d also hate to waste the total effort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is due in large part to the unusually strong showing <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUZine<\/span><\/strong> received from guest contributors. They include <strong>David Gracon<\/strong>, a professor at <strong>Eastern Illinois University<\/strong> who talks about <a title=\"Hallways Microcinema group @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/564445583638716\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Hallways Microcinema<\/span><\/strong><\/a> wherein he presented alternative media programs in his home, along with <strong>James Hall<\/strong>, a <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> junior in cinema studies who reports on the former UI undergraduate film journal <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MacGuffin<\/span><\/strong>, and <strong>Troy Michael<\/strong>, the publisher of <a title=\"Innocent Words Magazine :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/innocentwords.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Innocent Words Magazine<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> who theorizes on what keeps him going in the lively world of independent journalism and fandom. Your humble editor also planned to present a \u201clost\u201d (yet relatively recent) interview with <strong>Skip Huston<\/strong>, discussing the success of the <a title=\"The Avon Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theavon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Avon Theater<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in downtown <strong>Decatur<\/strong>, in addition to his scene-specific miscellanea that fills out every issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We know it would be easy to post this material on <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong> and be done. It also would make us feel like heels since we intended for a tactile reading experience. Much more so than when we launched <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUZine<\/span><\/strong> in 2007, the editorial appearing in its pages is drafted and designed to work in print. The same holds true for the aforementioned pieces and everything else we still need to finish for issue 10. We\u2019d prefer to stick with our program, so we\u2019re prepared to make a proposal to our <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> community that is not limited to the immediate purveyors of our film culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"A flier from 1973 promotes the third issue of MacGuffin. (We\u2019ll always be overjoyed to be proven wrong on this point, for what it\u2019s worth.) <a title=\"\u2018Periodicals du C-U\u2019 page :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?page_id=144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Their fees have allowed us to distribute all our issues <em>for free<\/em><\/span><\/a> at your favorite local places with open shelf and counter space to display them for the taking. Therefore, we\u2019re dipping our entrepreneurial toe into the world of crowdfunding and ask everyone who cares about what we\u2019ve been doing at <strong>MFHQ<\/strong> for the past 20 years \u2013 yes, <em>20 years<\/em> \u2013 to pitch in with a few spare bucks so we can return to the printing press by the New Year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">An elaborate tiered campaign offering all sorts of collectible whatzits and face-to-face meet-cutes does not sound like the way to go in this case. We\u2019re treating this as a drive to breathe life into the publication one more time as a communal action, bent on dispensing local stories and useful information in a portable format without loading up everyone with disposable swag, and have selected <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"GoFundMe :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>GoFundMe<\/strong><\/a><\/span> as our on-line base of operations. For the sake of transparency, we\u2019ll state that our target budget has typically been $2,000 to afford at least 1,000 copies for distribution, meaning, our GoFundMe benchmark is to raise at least half that amount from non-advertisers for issue 10. If we blow past the monetary goal, that extra funding would go into making up for lost advertising, printing bonus copies of 10, and then providing seed money for our next publication, in that order. It\u2019s straightforward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Between gifts from dearest readers like you and a good handful of traditional ad placements, we would receive the pick-me-up to finish off <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUZine<\/span><\/strong> <strong>10<\/strong> and place it back in your hands where it belongs. In its own small way, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUZine<\/span><\/strong> gives Champaign, Urbana, and the cities beyond the gift of cultural and historic knowledge like only we can do. Any amount contributes to the whole and, if nothing else, consider it an early birthday present for your less-humble-than-usual editor who will hit it bigger than ever on <strong>December 30<\/strong>.
