Based loosely on the life of 1920s coal miner and bootlegger <strong>Charlie Birger<\/strong>, <a title=\"\u201890 years ago today in Benton, Charlie Birger was the last man publicly hanged in Illinois\u2019 by staff :: The Southern Illinoisan\" href=\"https:\/\/thesouthern.com\/news\/local\/years-ago-today-in-benton-charlie-birger-was-the-last\/collection_70e03983-85a4-5a8c-a621-4c102828af12.html#10\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">whose gang battled rival groups as well as politicians and the <strong>Ku Klux Klan<\/strong> in southern <strong>Illinois<\/strong> before he was arrested, tried, and hanged<\/span><\/a>, the period comedy was partly filmed in <strong>Champaign County<\/strong> three years ago this month but held up for some time from general release. Problematic investors and the resulting nonpayment of wages for many actors and technical crew members by local outfit <strong>Studio 9 Productions<\/strong>, which partnered with Hagen\u2019s <strong>Triforum Inc.<\/strong> company to make <strong>CHARLIE<\/strong>, attracted a lawsuit that was <a title=\"The Daily Illini, May 12, 1971 :: Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections, University Library, UIUC\" href=\"http:\/\/idnc.library.illinois.edu\/cgi-bin\/illinois?a=d&amp;d=DIL19710512&amp;e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN--------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">detailed in the <strong>May 12, 1971<\/strong>, edition of the <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daily Illini<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> as well as <a title=\"S.E.C. News Digest, June 30, 1972 :: U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/digest\/1972\/dig063072.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the attention of the <strong>Securities and Exchange Commission<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, last year. With the air cleared, the feature has been in distribution since June through <strong>International Cinema Corporation<\/strong> and is now playing at 17 area cinemas, according to a report on p.19 of today\u2019s <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Urbana Courier<\/span><\/strong>. Hagen advises writer <strong>Jim Hopwood<\/strong> in an interview that the state of Illinois \u201cis a beautiful place to shoot movies and you people around here should look into encouraging more of it.\u201d Much of Hagen\u2019s core team on <strong>CHARLIE<\/strong> \u2013 himself, director <strong>Ivan Nagy<\/strong>, producer <strong>Martin D.
