(Photo: courtesy IFC Films)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_shatterglass_acceptableloss.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u201cLocal Film Company is Well Past Prelude\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With the home video release of SLICE today and expanding theatrical release of AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS, the thumbprint of Shatterglass Studios in Champaign continues to make a mark on the industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>by Jason Pankoke<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When we pulled together our thoughts on <a title=\"Art show marks CMM milestone :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the tenth anniversary show of <strong>Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong> last June<\/span><\/a>, one selection in their program just so happened to jog our memory about other milestones that we would be remiss to let slide again. Therefore, we congratulate <strong>Shatterglass Studios<\/strong> of Champaign on more than a decade of success \u2013 they opened for business in 2006 \u2013 and revisit a different occasion when their core team began to create the kind of output that fellow founders <strong>Brett Hays<\/strong> and <strong>Luke Boyce<\/strong> have always been striving to embrace. <a title=\"PRELUDE a first for Essence Films :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">As we first reported in <strong>2008<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Shatterglass premiered a pair of short subjects on <strong>August 7<\/strong> of that year at the <strong>Onarga Theater<\/strong> in little <strong>Onarga, IL<\/strong>, located not far from where Boyce was raised; they certainly proved to be modest harbingers of cinematic things to come.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the films, <strong>SUGAR<\/strong>, was a <strong>Chicago<\/strong>-lensed comedy about a waiter experiencing flights of fantasy when a patron strikes his fancy. In the other, <strong>PRELUDE<\/strong>, an enigmatic drama unfolds in which a down-on-his-luck local and a mysterious traveler meet and contemplate Big Questions over coffee. Both are co-productions with other indie upstarts of the time and the latter is significant not only because it was shot in <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> locations, but it is also the first fiction piece developed by the Boyce\/Hays tandem from a story by their own screenwriters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Credited to a short-lived sister company, <strong>Essence Films<\/strong>, <a title=\"PRELUDE @ Vimeo\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/4094388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">PRELUDE<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> introduces <strong>So Long Forgotten<\/strong> lead singer <strong>Micah Boyce<\/strong> and future Ph.D. candidate <strong>Vanessa Prokuski<\/strong> in the leads and <strong>The Bread Company<\/strong> of Urbana as their backdrop<\/span><\/a>. It is rare to see it in a public space as attendees of the CMM program did at the <strong>Art Theater<\/strong>, bringing us full circle and back to the present.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Shatterglass Studios (Art: courtesy SGS)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_shatterglass_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"345\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Shatterglass has since built itself into a go-to house for numerous services in multimedia. This includes planning and execution for clients nationwide on their commercials, industrial films, viral video presence, and the like, collaboration with institutions such as the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> on branding and educational materials, and various levels of support given to non-profit organizations and homegrown ventures in Champaign-Urbana to help achieve their needs with a professional sheen. The firm\u2019s neon-laced fa\u00e7ade on <strong>South Neil Street<\/strong> often serves as a gathering place for mixers, presentations, meetings, production workshops, and instructional sessions for youth in our community. Neither resume on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Shatterglass Studios :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shatterglassstudios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their Web site<\/a><\/span> or <a title=\"Shatterglass Studios @ Internet Movie Database\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/search\/title?companies=co0326011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <strong>Internet Movie Database<\/strong><\/span><\/a> adequately covers the depth of how Shatterglass serves its neighbors and customers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That said, the company remains committed to exploring the entertainment industry. In-house employees and freelance associates take on positions with others\u2019 movie projects in order to sharpen their skills and increase their visibility, whether or not the firm is named in the titles. Apart from sizeable roles in producing <strong>LEADING LADIES<\/strong> and <strong>CONSUMED<\/strong> here in east central <strong>Illinois<\/strong>, Shatterglass team members have worked on several other titles that include <strong>THE ORIGINS OF WIT AND HUMOR<\/strong>, a droll misadventure about a comedy writer (<strong>Joe Hursley<\/strong>) who drinks a magic potion, <strong>THE HOLLOW<\/strong>, a <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>-set mystery with <strong>William Forsythe<\/strong> (<strong>THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE<\/strong>) and <strong>William Sadler<\/strong> (<strong>HAWAII FIVE-O<\/strong>), <strong>THRILL RIDE<\/strong>, a children\u2019s adventure set in an indoor amusement park that stars <strong>Kristen Johnson<\/strong> (<strong>3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN<\/strong>), and <strong>SEARCHING FOR VENICE<\/strong>, a drama about grieving family members that are gathered at a vineyard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">More recently, <strong>A24 Films<\/strong> chose <strong>September 10<\/strong> to debut <a title=\"SLICE :: A24 Films\" href=\"https:\/\/a24films.com\/films\/slice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the anachronistic horror-comedy <strong>SLICE<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, a joint venture between director\/writer <strong>Austin Vesely<\/strong> and breakout music star <strong>Chance the Rapper<\/strong>, as a one-night-only event in 21 cities followed by VOD release the next day; it was the subject of much speculation as its filming in the <strong>Joliet<\/strong> area had wrapped more than two years prior. Familiar names in the final credits crawl include Hays as a co-producer and production coordinator, Boyce as the assembly editor, <strong>Ashleigh Coartney<\/strong> as head of the hair department, <strong>Anthony E. Cabral<\/strong> as first assistant director, and <strong>Iman Sharabash<\/strong> as production secretary. With as little advance notice as before, <strong>Lionsgate<\/strong> serves up <strong>SLICE<\/strong> on DVD today, <strong>Tuesday, January 29<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Zazie Beetz stars in SLICE. (Photo: courtesy A24 Films)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_shatterglass_zazieslice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cabral and Hays pulled similar duties at the end of last summer on <a title=\"\u2018Behind the scenes of the star-studded \u2018Killing Eleanor\u2019 indie that filmed in the Chicago suburbs\u2019 by Tracy Swartz :: The Chicago Tribune\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/entertainment\/tv\/ct-ent-killing-eleanor-annika-marks-20181126-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">KILLING ELEANOR<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">, a dark road trip comedy<\/span><\/a> that is written and co-produced by <strong>GOLIATH<\/strong> and <strong>WACO<\/strong> actress <strong>Annika Marks<\/strong>, when the production visited numerous Chicago suburbs for settings; Marks co-stars with <strong>Jane Kaczmarek<\/strong> (<strong>MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE<\/strong>) and <strong>Jenny O\u2019Hara<\/strong> (<strong>THE MINDY PROJECT<\/strong>) in the title role. <a title=\"AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS :: IFC Films\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ifcfilms.com\/films\/an-acceptable-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Another Windy City effort called <strong>AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, developed by the veteran director-producer team <strong>Joe Chappelle<\/strong> (<strong>CHICAGO FIRE<\/strong>) and <strong>Colleen Griffen<\/strong> (<strong>THIEVES QUARTET<\/strong>) of <strong>Evanston<\/strong>, is a political drama starring <strong>Jamie Lee Curtis<\/strong> (<strong>HALLOWEEN<\/strong>) and <strong>Tika Sumpter<\/strong> (<strong>SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU<\/strong>) that involved several of the aforementioned folks. <strong>IFC Films<\/strong> began VOD and a limited theatrical rollout for <strong>AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS<\/strong> on <strong>Friday, January 18<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Certainly, more in this vein will be on tap for years to come; features are currently in the works with both <strong>MPI Media<\/strong>, the independent <strong>Orland Park<\/strong>\/Chicago label best known for its string of above-average horror films, and <strong>MarVista Entertainment<\/strong>, a <strong>California<\/strong>-based sales agent and producer with a sizeable catalog of television shows and films that includes <strong>CONSUMED<\/strong>. Concurrently, the ultimate Big Question now looms for Shatterglass itself; after all the miles logged, parties wrapped, contracts fulfilled, and assets delivered to others in their first baker\u2019s dozen years of existence, when will the firm <em>finally<\/em> bring its own feature films to fruition?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The ensuing time frame between <strong>PRELUDE<\/strong> and today has been pockmarked with small-scale efforts by Shatterglass staff using their facilities and knowhow. For instance, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"THE POOKA @ Vimeo\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/224379592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an offbeat short made recently in Champaign,<strong> THE POOKA<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, stars <strong>Chris Sullivan<\/strong> (<strong>THIS IS US<\/strong>) as a children\u2019s party entertainer who comforts a grieving woman played by <strong>Lily Rains<\/strong> (<strong>LAW &amp; ORDER TRUE CRIME<\/strong>); it made the festival rounds in 2017 and is unrelated to the more horrific <strong>POOKA<\/strong> feature appearing last month on <strong>Hulu<\/strong>. Hays and Boyce have backed up their support of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Pens to Lens Screenwriting Competition :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/penstolens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the popular <strong>Pens to Lens<\/strong> program<\/a><\/span> by producing entries for them such as <strong>EVEN AND ODD<\/strong> and <strong>RACE YOU TO RUSSIA<\/strong>. They\u2019ve also lent their expertise to projects of various low-budget scope with roots in the area, including the first set of episodes for the Chicago Web series <strong>SEEDS<\/strong> and <strong>John Isberg<\/strong>\u2019s deep dive into Champaign indie rock history from a wide genre perspective, <strong>WHERE IT BEGINS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"CONSUMED (MarVista Entertainment\/Echo Bridge Acquisition Corp.)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_shatterglass_consumed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s clear the yearning for full-scale production is entrenched in the Shatterglass business plan, however. Between 2014 and 2016, the firm hit at least three pivotal points that seem indicative of their filmmaking commitment. The first was that all-encompassing shoot of <strong>CONSUMED<\/strong> in 2014; a pet project of <strong>Zoe Lister-Jones<\/strong> (<strong>LIFE IN PIECES<\/strong>) and <strong>Daryl Wein<\/strong> (<strong>WHITE RABBIT<\/strong>), the anti-GMO drama attracted name talent and technical crew to Champaign-Urbana, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018\u2018Giving community' putting its best foot forward\u2019 by Melissa Merli :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/local\/2014-06-22\/giving-community-putting-its-best-foot-forward.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relying on Shatterglass personnel to fulfill the production\u2019s remaining needs<\/a><\/span>. The second was <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Efforts underway to make C-U a movie hot spot\u2019 by Melissa Merli :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/arts-entertainment\/local\/2015-05-24\/melissa-merli-efforts-underway-make-c-u-movie-hot-spot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 2015 launch of a new companion company, <strong>Shatterglass Films<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, to handle the task of incubating and executing high-quality narratives and documentaries. Local entrepreneurs <strong>Jennifer Shelby, Scott Reichard<\/strong>, and <strong>Habeeb Habeeb<\/strong> helped kick-start the offshoot, with Shelby becoming a managing partner and the others providing initial investment. The third was the 2016 debut of the <a title=\"Champaign County Film Office :: Visit Champaign County\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitchampaigncounty.org\/film-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Champaign County Film Office<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">, a resource for local and out-of-town producers<\/span><\/a> that is housed at the \u201c<strong>Visit Champaign County<\/strong>\u201d tourism bureau and engineered between that organization, other commerce-intense offices, and Hays. <strong>Ryan Reid<\/strong> serves as the office\u2019s liaison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A handful of properties have been announced since then, an exciting tease on top of the overall goodwill that has come from Shatterglass\u2019 track record. Initiatives on the board include several in development with <strong>Chaz Ebert<\/strong>, such as a biographical retelling of the tragic fate that befell <strong>Emmett Till<\/strong>, based on the book <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Death of Innocence<\/span><\/strong> by UIUC professor <strong>Christopher Benson<\/strong> and his mother <strong>Mamie Till-Mobley<\/strong>, and a full-length appreciation of <strong>Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong>. Also in the early stages of coordination and funding is an adaptation of the <strong>Tim Seeley\/Mike Norto<\/strong> zombie-drama comic book series <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Revival<\/span><\/strong>, which is slated for production in 2019 and would serve as the feature debut of Boyce as a director. We can only guess how many other ideas have taken shape or form as the team stockpiles them for future use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"\u2018Behind The Screens\u2019 by Monica Kass Rogers :: Evanston Magazine\" href=\"https:\/\/jwcdaily.com\/evanstonmagazine\/2018\/12\/01\/behind-the-screens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Coverage afforded items like <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">AN AFFORDABLE LOSS<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018\u2018Slice,\u2019 starring Chance the Rapper, is a satisfying spin on good vs. evil \u2014 plus pizza\u2019 by Jessi Roti :: The Chicago Tribune\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/entertainment\/movies\/ct-mov-slice-film-premiere-chance-the-rapper-0911-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SLICE<\/strong> in the major press<\/a><\/span> tend to highlight the fashionable talking points \u2013 hurdles navigated, famous names attached, intended audiences and storytelling goals \u2013 without broaching the nuts and bolts of the process too much. It does little favor to the vast number of individuals that contribute to the end result, meaning, anonymity in the public eye comes with the territory for many who work hard in the business called show.
