The obituary by <strong>Melissa Merli<\/strong> that would appear in the <strong>October 20<\/strong> edition of the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> tells of a much-respected man whose efforts in propagating the arts had enriched Champaign-Urbana for more than two decades. During his collegiate studies up north at <strong>Elmhurst College<\/strong> and <strong>Roosevelt University<\/strong> in the 1960s, Epple wrote for <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Aardvark\u2019s \u2018National Reactionary,\u2019 1964\u2019 :: Magazine Parody\" href=\"https:\/\/magazineparody.com\/2016\/06\/22\/aardvarks-national-reactionary-1964\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underground student magazines such as <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Aardvark<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> that gleefully bucked the status quo and attracted the ire of academic superiors. He continued to be productive with his side projects after moving downstate and enrolling at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> to pursue a doctorate in English, becoming ubiquitous with cinema in the community. Ventures during schooling included <strong>Aardvark Films<\/strong>, a booking entity, <a title=\"Calendar: May 18-24, 2018 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Champaign-Urbana Film Group<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, a filmmaking club, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Oscar nominated UI alumni gone :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Depot<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, a performance space in downtown <strong>Urbana<\/strong> that hosted original stage productions and local film premieres. Epple graduated and remained in Champaign, operating a pair of companies out of his <strong>West John Street<\/strong> residence that doubled as an office and private screening room: <strong>Expanded Cinema Group<\/strong>, an agency launched with <a title=\"\u2018Photographer was figure on local art, film scene\u2019 by Paul Wood :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/local\/2008-03-11\/photographer-was-figure-local-art-film-scene.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the photographer <strong>Scott Mutter<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that presented non-mainstream and foreign films on campus, and <strong>Picture Start<\/strong>, a short film distributor specializing in animation and women-directed pieces that booked non-theatrical showings of prints across the <strong>United States<\/strong>. He also served as an adjunct professor at UI to teach English and film, wrote for myriad journals and newsletters, and <a title=\"\u2018Film festival starts Friday\u2019 :: The Daily Egyptian, March 29, 1979, p.10\" href=\"https:\/\/opensiuc.lib.siu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1014&amp;context=de_March1979\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">participated in film festivals outside the area such as the first <strong>Big Muddy Film Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/a> at <strong>Southern Illinois University-Carbondale<\/strong> in 1979. Even though <a title=\"\u2018Show &amp; Tell: Alternative Film Distribution\u2019 by Nancy Gerstman :: The Independent Film &amp; Video Monthly, Jan.-Feb. 1986, p.10-15\" href=\"http:\/\/independent-magazine.org\/files\/2014\/09\/independent09foun.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">UI audiences dwindled for his fare in the late 1970s and 1980s<\/span><\/a> due to lacking interest in the esoteric and the rise of home video, Epple <a title=\"Calendar: November 17-23, 2017 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">played a role in reviving Champaign\u2019s <strong>Art Theater<\/strong><\/span><\/a> when it opened anew in early 1987 as the <strong>New Art Theatre<\/strong> and continued Picture Start into the early 1990s. Above all, he was a mentor and inspiration to many dozens of UI students and C-U citizens, some of whom went on to work in the industry like <a title=\"\u2018Giving Me the Business\u2019 :: Warrior Films\" href=\"https:\/\/warriorfilms.org\/giving-me-the-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Warrior Films<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u2019 <strong>Frederick Marx<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Per the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span>, Epple sold his stake in Picture Start to his business partner, <strong>Jeff Hellyer<\/strong>, after returning to Chicago and was operating a similar distributor called <strong>Short Form Releasing<\/strong> at the time of his death.
