(Photos: Accessed from respective streaming videos, Feb. 20, 2019)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_critics_grid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A few months back we shared <a title=\"Of picks, pans, and \u201cPotato\u201d puns :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">news about the former <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong>\/<strong>Savoy<\/strong> resident <strong>Gerry Kissell<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, who is reviving his critical voice as both a reviewer and, <a title=\"Pop Culture Minefield w\/Keith &amp; Gerry Vlog @ GoFundMe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/pop-culture-minefield-video-podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">evidenced by this <strong>GoFundMe<\/strong> campaign<\/span><\/a> to help afford new recording gear, a vlogger. The piece inspired us to look around for the folks in our neck of the prairie who might be presenting their filmic findings on screen via the Internet or television, and \u2026 there are very few. It <em>is<\/em> a bit stupefying in context, yes? These same Twin Cities, serving as a defining influence on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Roger Ebert :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the best known, <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, and a college stop for one of the more distinctive, <strong>Gene Shalit<\/strong>, have presumably produced a solid number of writers and talent who ply their trade in the professional mass media. Even then, in a virtual space cluttered with commentators and so-called influencers who upload slicker-than-the-next videos and podcasts of their viewpoints, analyses, and gossip, we don\u2019t see that kind of material on the cinema coming out of the C-U on the regular that we could easily locate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We\u2019re arguably moving away from the days when traditional newspaper critics doubled up with a radio or television station to broadcast their viewpoints. For immediate examples, Ebert had presence on <strong>WLS-TV Channel 7<\/strong> (<strong>ABC<\/strong>) in <strong>Chicago<\/strong> for many years as did <strong>Gene Siskel<\/strong> on rival<strong> WBBM-TV Channel 2<\/strong> (<strong>CBS<\/strong>), while Shalit enjoyed nearly 40 years on <strong>NBC<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>THE TODAY SHOW<\/strong>. One hardy individual has managed well enough to keep the cross-platform tradition alive in east central Illinois. <strong>Chuck Koplinski<\/strong>, a language arts instructor at <strong>Urbana Middle School<\/strong>, leads quite the second life as a film aficionado. Long a mainstay in print downstate with <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Chuck Koplinski :: The Illinois Times\" href=\"https:\/\/illinoistimes.com\/articles.sec-32-1-film-chuck-koplinski.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Illinois Times<\/span><\/strong> in <strong>Springfield<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and <a title=\"\u2018The Screening Room\u2019 by Chuck Koplinski :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/search\/apachesolr_search\/screening%20room%20koplinski?filters=created%3A%5B2019-01-01T00%3A00%3A00Z%20TO%202020-01-01T00%3A00%3A00Z%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<strong>The Screening Room<\/strong>\u201d weekly feature in the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, he covers new releases on the <a title=\"\u2018Reel Talk\u2019 with Chuck and Pam :: Mix 94.5\" href=\"https:\/\/mix945.com\/mornings\/chuck-the-move-guy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<strong>Morning MIX<\/strong>\u201d show airing on <strong>Mix 94.5 FM<\/strong><\/span><\/a> as well as both the <a title=\"\u2018ciLiving\u2019 :: WCIA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcia.com\/ciliving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<strong>Morning Show<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>ciLiving<\/strong>\u201d on <strong>WCIA-TV Channel 3<\/strong> (<strong>CBS<\/strong>)<\/span><\/a>. His output is prolific and the breadth of it enhanced greatly by memberships in groups like the <strong>Chicago Film Critics Association<\/strong> (CFCA), which allow access to industry events, celebrity interviews, and pre-release screenings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lately, Koplinski has paired with <a title=\"Reel Honest Reviews :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/reelhonestreviews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">suburban critic <strong>Pamela K. Powell<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for many of the WCIA and Mix 94.5 segments. Herself a member of CFCA and co-founder of the <strong>Chicago Independent Film Critics Circle<\/strong>, Powell writes for the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Kankakee Valley Daily Journal<\/span><\/strong>, reports for <strong>FF2 Media<\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fete Lifestyle Magazine<\/span><\/strong> with a stress on women in film, and guests on <strong>WGN AM 720<\/strong>. <a title=\"\u2018Reel Talk\u2019 with Chuck and Pam :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/reeltalkwithchuckandpam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The team-up has been branded \u201c<strong>\u2018Reel Talk\u2019 with Chuck and Pam<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/a> for their social media accounts and public appearances, the latter of which have recently included a visit to <strong>New York City<\/strong> and a table at the <strong>Critics\u2019 Choice Awards<\/strong> in <strong>Santa Monica, CA<\/strong>, for both, plus a snowy sojourn to the <strong>Sundance Film Festival<\/strong> in <strong>Park City, UT<\/strong>, for Powell. It seems the handle first appeared in a pilot episode for a movie debate program that was taped in 2017 and is present among the videos on the pair\u2019s <strong>YouTube<\/strong> channel. Opening with an upbeat montage filmed in downtown Champaign that <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"AT THE MOVIES opening 1983 @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7hAKkYQKIVs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">echoes the credits sequences from Siskel and Ebert\u2019s tenures with <strong>PBS<\/strong> and <strong>Disney<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, the cohosts converge at the <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> and settle into front row seats for a familiar back-and-forth session on then-current releases such as <strong>BABY DRIVER, THE BEGUILED<\/strong>, and <strong>SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ku4MN810OSU\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The potential always exists in a show like <strong>REEL TALK<\/strong> if the personalities jive \u2013 Powell and Koplinski are knowledgeable and lively in their banter while exuding an approachable charm \u2013 and its audience comes away with useful suggestions and insight. As far as shopping around a pilot that does not stray far from a formula introduced in the 1970s, who can say if it has a place in today\u2019s media landscape? We\u2019re guessing many broadcast schedulers might consider the genre pass\u00e9 and simply pass, even if <strong>REEL TALK<\/strong> would be glossed up with improved production value. (We\u2019ve already witnessed the quick demise of <a title=\"EBERT PRESENTS \u2018AT THE MOVIES\u2019 :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ebertpresents.com\/]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <strong>AT THE MOVIES<\/strong> revival produced by Roger and <strong>Chaz Ebert<\/strong><\/span><\/a> at the beginning of the decade.) In the meantime, our downstate duo has cemented a partnership with WCIA that includes taping sessions on the affiliate\u2019s existing sets, including <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Oscar Nominations 2019 :: \u2018Reel Talk\u2019 with Chuck and Pam @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kK3hUK4Jouc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a viral video in which they ruminate on the results of Sunday\u2019s <strong>Academy Awards<\/strong> ceremony<\/a><\/span>, which provides them with an accessible home base.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1c8CHtzOcsg\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As Koplinski and Powell continue their productive streak, is anyone else in the C-U following suit? To answer that, we must enter the fringes of our media outlets to see other examples of programs with similar aims. A constant in the rotation of <strong>Urbana Public Television<\/strong> (UPTV) is <strong>REEL REVIEWS<\/strong>, started by movie and music fan <strong>Chike Coleman<\/strong> and cohosted by the Urbana city government\u2019s IT director, <strong>Sanford Hess<\/strong>. Most episodes are subtitled \u201cThe Cinematic Underground,\u201d a blanket for discussion of current releases and, certainly, a nod to its cable access origins, while episodes labeled as \u201cRewind\u201d favor older films. The lack of commercial interruption and limited topics allow Coleman and Hess to hold a reasonable, in-depth conversation rather than the brisk soundbites of <strong>AT THE MOVIES<\/strong> and its direct descendants. <strong>REEL REVIEWS<\/strong> has aired on UPTV for several years; <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"REEL REVIEWS 6-2-12 with guest Sanford Hess @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Uz1-MrONsVA&amp;t=1218s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the oldest episode on-line dates from 2012 and features Hess as a guest<\/a><\/span>, talking up the Art Theater with Coleman and the show\u2019s previous cohost, Koplinski. Our sample of <strong>REEL REVIEWS<\/strong> embedded here is from January, when Hess and Coleman muscled their way through <strong>AQUAMAN<\/strong> and <strong>SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/23AFwBEQX60\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While one can enjoy plenty more <strong>REEL REVIEWS<\/strong> <a title=\"Chike Coleman @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCUy15XvCujNzHD6JH3HQ3Jw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">on the Internet<\/span><\/a> or <a title=\"Urbana Public Television @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCmBGzD97keBfCjV80jShRQQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">at <strong>Channel 6<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on the cable television dial, the opposite is true for a different local effort. <strong>IF YOU LIKED \u2026 YOU\u2019LL LOVE \u2026<\/strong> appears to be a pilot, made in 2011 for <strong>Parkland College Television<\/strong> (PCTV), and features <a title=\"Sydney J. Slobodnik :: Department of English, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.english.illinois.edu\/people\/sslobod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Parkland<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> and <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> lecturer <strong>Syd Slobodnik<\/strong><\/span><\/a> with <a title=\"Dr. Matthew Hurt :: Humanities Department, Parkland College\" href=\"https:\/\/www.parkland.edu\/Main\/Academics\/Departments\/Humanities\/Connect\/Directory\/hurt-matthew-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Parkland <strong>Humanities<\/strong> chair <strong>Dr. Matthew Hurt<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the hosting roles. The concept is to pour over classic cinema that comes to mind based on current releases in the theaters; in this instance, the <strong>Coen Brothers\u2019 TRUE GRIT<\/strong> remake and <strong>THE KING\u2019S SPEECH<\/strong> lead to recommendations of <strong>THE SEARCHERS<\/strong> with <strong>John Wayne<\/strong> and <strong>THE LION IN WINTER<\/strong> with <strong>Peter O&#8217;Toole<\/strong> and <strong>Katharine Hepburn<\/strong>. Filled with a nice amount of clips and stills, the program feels substantial in content even with the threadbare set arranged on Parkland\u2019s lab sound stage. Is it possible this is the only episode made, repeated <em>ad nauseam<\/em> for years on PCTV? Slobodnik continues the concept in written form in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">buzz magazine<\/span><\/strong>, where <a title=\"Syd Slobodnik :: buzz magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/readbuzz.com\/author\/syd-slobodnik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">he contributes a \u201c<strong>Hidden Gem<\/strong>\u201d movie feature every week<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZM4ipB9N0Pk\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We can take heart in the fact that some of the budding movie scholars among us are interested in using media to communicate, just like the individuals in the three shows we\u2019ve already surveyed. The newest attempt is a series of recorded monologues and discussions by UIUC students who belong to <a title=\"C-U Cinefile :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/cucinefile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <strong>C-U Cinefile<\/strong> club<\/span><\/a>. We picked an example that is the classic round-table format in which <strong>James Hall, Nick Arroyo, Cece Walcynski<\/strong>, and <strong>Colin Meier<\/strong> offer ideas on what makes for an ideal holiday movie; <a title=\"C-U Cinefile @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCmNKbdJoYaw5BaWn5iG_BoQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">most pieces are of the clips-and-voiceover kind<\/span><\/a> and cover such topics as horror film remakes, Westerns, <strong>David Lynch<\/strong>, and <strong>THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW<\/strong>. If considering a bit deeper the qualities and elements of a film is your bag, dearest viewers, now is a good time to press \u201cplay\u201d on these programs and support the ongoing ones with your viewership. We need to do our best to ensure that Champaign-Urbana is never barren of passionate talking heads with much to say about what is playing near you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the passing of Gene Siskel. <a title=\"Gene Siskel :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.genesiskel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Always remember<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> According to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">IndieWire<\/span><\/strong> contributor <strong>Christian Blauvelt<\/strong>, <a title=\"\u2018Why Aren\u2019t You Watching TV\u2019s Last Serious Show About Movies?\u2019 by Christian Blauvelt :: IndieWire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2019\/01\/tom-brook-talking-movies-bbc-world-news-tv-channel-1202034765\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">there is only one program left in the (English-language) world that truly passes muster as worthwhile televised coverage of the film industry<\/span><\/a> \u2013 <strong>TALKING MOVIES<\/strong>, hosted by <strong>Tom Brook<\/strong> and aired by the <strong>BBC<\/strong> for the past 20 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.3<\/em> Syd Slobodnik has a long association with the <strong>Illini Media Company<\/strong>, reaching back to his work at the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daily Illini<\/span><\/strong> in the 1970s when a UIUC undergraduate, so it\u2019s not inconceivable for him to use <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">buzz<\/span> as an outlet even though it is otherwise a \u201cwork experience\u201d opportunity for currently-enrolled students. <strong>IF YOU LIKED \u2026 YOU\u2019LL LOVE \u2026<\/strong> co-producer <strong>Michael Coulter<\/strong> also wrote for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">buzz<\/span> as a non-student, cranking out a weekly humor column for the magazine\u2019s print editions in the mid-2000s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.4<\/em> Although these points are secondary to the post, we feel we should briefly address something else that involves the growth and well-being of local students including our future artists, critics, and the like. Not only is Chuck Koplinski\u2019s output impressive when you factor in his livelihood as both a full-time teacher and a father, but you can\u2019t help but understand how his \u201cmovie life\u201d might be a grateful escape during tough stretches, such as <a title=\"\u2018Federal agency sues Urbana school district over caps on teacher raises\u2019 by Lyndsay Jones :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/local\/2018-08-13\/federal-agency-sues-urbana-school-district-over-caps-teacher-raises.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the issues of salary caps for veteran instructors<\/span><\/a> and <a title=\"\u2018Urbana parents, staff unsatisfied with district's approach to discipline\u2019 by Lyndsay Jones :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/local\/2018-09-19\/urbana-parents-staff-unsatisfied-with-districts-approach-discipline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">student bullying under an ill-serving disciplinary system<\/span><\/a> that currently plague the Urbana school district. Hats off to him for not holding back.
