(Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_arttheater_neon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At this point, it\u2019s almost moot to cry \u201chelp\u201d on behalf of <a title=\"The Art Theater :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thearttheater.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> in downtown<strong> Champaign, IL<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, for the people have responded in kind to their surprise need for $25,000 posthaste. First pitched in an e-mail blast sent out last <strong>Thursday, February 21<\/strong>, by <strong>Jerry Payonk<\/strong>, the president of the board of directors at the <strong>Art Film Foundation<\/strong>, the drive has accumulated nearly $22,000 as of 5 p.m. yesterday, displayed on the home page of the Art\u2019s Web site as an animated thermometer graphic. There is no reason to doubt it will hit the top by tomorrow and beat the \u201c25K in 25 Days\u201d time frame handily; we simply feel obligated to share the news since we value the Art for many things including its symbiotic role in staging the <a title=\"New Art Film Festival :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/newartfilmfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">New Art Film Festival<\/span><\/strong><\/a> with us every year for our community and its filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is a great showing, yet, we don\u2019t like seeing our friends, neighbors, and former neighbors hit up for so much on short notice. In comparison, we received plenty of time to listen and react when <strong>Sanford Hess, Ben Galewsky<\/strong>, and company let Champaign-Urbana know about <a title=\"Co-op to run Art as of Sept. 7 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=5256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">their plans to sell shares under their cooperative model to the tune of a small mint<\/span><\/a>, intended to cover operating costs and the much-debated digital conversion mandated by the exhibition industry. <a title=\"\u2018Help The Art Raise 25K in 25 Days!\u2019 by Jerry Payonk :: The Art Theater\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thearttheater.org\/help-the-art-raise-25k-in-25-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Payonk says obliquely in his message<\/span><\/a> that, \u201cDue to a slow end of 2018 [and] beginning of 2019, we need $25,000 immediately to keep us open.\u201d What led to this being an issue? Low ticket sales? (Maybe.) Frigid temperatures and burst pipes? (Yes, those did happen.) A slow start to gearing up for fundraising? (Since this is the first definitive push for patrons\u2019 money that we\u2019ve seen since the Art transformed into a non-profit organization, more than likely.) Well, <em>damn<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We didn\u2019t learn much more from an appearance by <strong>Dr. Porsh\u00e9 Garner<\/strong>, the executive director of the foundation, during \u201c<strong>The Morning Show<\/strong>\u201d on <strong>WCIA-TV<\/strong> early <strong>Monday, February 25<\/strong>. <a title=\"\u2018Save the Art Theater\u2019 by Alexandra Corradetti :: WCIA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcia.com\/the-morning-show\/save-the-art-theater\/1808546332?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook_WCIA_3_News&amp;fbclid=IwAR1070jkdHqNEL6LOX0h2I0-DfPV-Zf1K4WZ7vvtB7Z0Jy7dJS_lj2xyuv0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Discussing the Art\u2019s needs with co-hosts <strong>Alexandra Corradetti<\/strong> and <strong>Christie Battista<\/strong><\/span><\/a> under the pretense that \u201c25K in 25 Days\u201d would succeed, Dr. Garner frames the move as necessary to secure their \u201coperational efforts\u201d to do business and help \u201cfind their footing\u201d as they move towards courting their patrons for regular and on-going donations. Half a week later, then, the Art suddenly is <em>not<\/em> under the threat of closure, <a title=\"\u2018Champaign movie theater seeks public funding to prevent closure\u2019 :: WCCU Fox 55 &amp; 27\" href=\"https:\/\/foxillinois.com\/news\/local\/champaign-movie-theater-seeks-public-funding-to-prevent-closure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">despite all the dire headlines<\/span><\/a> and <a title=\"\u2018Slow winter forcing Art Theater to raise $25,000 in 25 days\u2019 by Paul Wood :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/local\/2019-02-23\/slow-winter-forcing-art-theater-raise-25000-25-days.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">teaser copy thrown up by the local media<\/span><\/a> based on Payonk\u2019s plea. Whew! <em>Again<\/em>. We guess it\u2019s their prerogative as to whether they break down the Art\u2019s needs for the general public in this new era. Let\u2019s give them the benefit of the doubt in these early moments and keep going.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Although<\/em>, encores of this presentation need to be few and far between if you can swing it, dearest Art Theater.
