IT\u2019S A WONDERFUL SORORITY LIFE<\/strong>, is broadcast on <strong>PBS<\/strong> stations across the <strong>United States<\/strong> for the first time. This half-hour expos\u00e9 by first-time filmmaker <strong>John Chua<\/strong> emphasizes humor in its attempt to picture how a powerful social organization for young women can seemingly choose at will to be exclusive and secretive. Various interviewees who are identified only by their first names dish about the practices held sacred within sorority walls while an African-American undergraduate, <strong>Ajana<\/strong>, goes through the \u201crush\u201d process to see if she can qualify for a \u201cbid\u201d from one or more houses. The surprise distribution of <strong>WHATEVER!<\/strong> to PBS affiliates for non-prime time play, arranged in large part by the <strong>NAATA<\/strong> (currently the <a title=\"Center for Asian American Media :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/caamedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Center for Asian American Media<\/span><\/strong><\/a>), follows a handful of regional broadcasts including on <strong>Chicago<\/strong>\u2019s <a title=\"\u2018'American Gothic\u2019: The short-lived CBS series returns...\u2019 by Chuck Ulie :: The Chicago Tribune\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-xpm-1998-01-02-9801020055-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WTTW Channel 11<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> in January 1998<\/span><\/a> and <strong>Urbana<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>WILL Channel 12<\/strong> in the fall of 1997. <strong>WHATEVER!<\/strong> is another independent documentary <a title=\"Calendar: July 14-20, 2017 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=11101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">made in recent years like <strong>IN WHOSE HONOR?<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to rile up segments of the UI community by critiquing and criticizing aspects of its campus culture; panel discussions open to the public involving Chua, field producer <strong>Edward Burch<\/strong>, faculty members, and the <strong>Panhellenic Council<\/strong> debated over the accuracy and merits of what is depicted in the film, such as the implications that sorority sisters might shy away from choosing students of color for their ranks and reflect a character that is more party-centric than philanthropic.
