Archive materials, reenactments, and narration by host and cowriter <strong>Ira Flatow<\/strong> (<strong>NEWTON\u2019S APPLE<\/strong>) recall the many months of trial and error that physicists <strong>Walter Brattain, <a title=\"\u2018John Bardeen: the greatest physicist you (probably) never heard of\u2019 by Steven Strogatz :: Science Focus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/science\/john-bardeen-the-greatest-physicist-you-probably-never-heard-of\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">John Bardeen<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, and <strong>William Shockley<\/strong> went through that led up to <strong>December 23, 1947<\/strong>, the day Brattain invented a \u201ctriangle\u201d of plastic, germanium, and gold foil based on Bardeen\u2019s ideas that successfully amplified currents. Shockley, a supervisor for the project at the <strong>Bell Telephone Laboratories<\/strong> in <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> who was not present during the discovery, improved on their design independently from the entire team in an effort to control how this potential breakthrough would be credited in the future. Bardeen left Bell Labs in 1951 thanks to Shockley\u2019s micromanagement streak and joined the faculty of the physics and electrical engineering departments at the <strong>University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign<\/strong>, where he taught until 1975 and continued to research and publish until his death in 1991. Despite a falling out between the three primary researchers as coworkers, they celebrated together in 1956 as laureates after accepting the <strong>Nobel Prize<\/strong> for physics in <strong>Stockholm, Sweden<\/strong>, in honor of their achievements with superconductivity. Colleagues from Illinois who appear in interview segments include the physicists <strong>Frederick Seitz<\/strong> and <a title=\"\u2018Holonyak, who 'replaced Edison's lamp,' retires from UI\u2019 by Christine Des Garennes :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/holonyak-who-replaced-edison-s-lamp-retires-from-ui\/article_1b58f955-3a12-57bc-a9b5-96aed7460c98.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Nick Holonyak, Jr.<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, and historians <strong>Charles C.
