(Photo: courtesy Kate Trefry)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_krampus2019_howtobealone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just in time to warm the cockles of everyone\u2019s hearts, the <strong>Krampusnacht Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> (KNFFF) will delight our inner misfits and counter the standard Xmas pageantry when it overtakes <strong><a title=\"SoDo Theatre @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sodotheatre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">SoDo Theatre<\/span><\/a>, 111 S. Walnut St., Champaign, IL<\/strong>, for its debut on <strong>Saturday, December 7<\/strong>, starting at <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> A set of 24 shorts culled from more than 200 international entries sent to festival director <strong>Thomas Nicol<\/strong> will play the show, named after <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018The Origin of Krampus, Europe\u2019s Evil Twist on Santa\u2019 by Jennifer Billock :: Smithsonian Magazine\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/travel\/krampus-could-come-you-holiday-season-180957438\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the annual event in European folklore when the devilish <strong>Krampus<\/strong> emerges late on <strong>December 5<\/strong> to punish the naughty children<\/a><\/span> who are not in line to receive good tidings the following morning from <strong>St. Nicholas<\/strong>. That said, the shorts to be projected on the screen with care at KNFFF are not necessarily yuletide horrors, as is apparent from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Krampusnacht Freaky Film Festival :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/knfff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the illustrated descriptions on their website<\/a><\/span>, and three of them hail from C-U filmmakers <strong>Andrew Nygard, Clint Andrae<\/strong>, and <strong>Jeff Kacmarynski<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cI\u2019d advise folks to plan on getting [to SoDo] a bit early,\u201d suggests Nicol in a brief discussion with <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong>. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a red carpet event, but there will be some fun, thematically appropriate photo [opportunities] when the doors open at 6:30 p.m.\u201d Given the best-known depiction of the Krampus in contemporary cultures \u2013 ironically, the throwback \u201cKrampus run\u201d staged in several countries where packs of creatures roam city streets that are lined with families \u2013 Nicol\u2019s comments may or may not hint at its physical presence at the KNFFF. \u201cWhile the event is deeply inspired by the spirit of <strong>Freeky Creek<\/strong> [<strong>Short Film Festival<\/strong>, <a title=\"IOW: Hello \u2018Kitty\u2019 &amp; Freeky ditties :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=9469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">a former local event involving costumed actors and puppets<\/span><\/a>] it is going to be its own unique entity and have a distinct framing device for the films.\u201d Are you grimacing with joy, kiddies?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Krampusnacht Freeky Film Festival (Artwork: courtesy Thomas Nicol)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_krampus2019_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nicol, a software professional who has figured in a number of <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> film efforts including <strong>Pens to Lens<\/strong> and the <a title=\"Youth expressed positively in films :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=12893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">SUPERZUZAA<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> internet series<\/span><\/a>, admits he is testing the frozen waters with KNFFF. \u201cAs a first-year fest, I\u2019m not starting <em>too<\/em> ambitiously with the extra show elements. My goal for this inaugural event is to establish a solid foundation.\u201d Although he is downplaying what may still look ambitious to attendees, Nicol typically has a good sense for how to achieve quality with modest means. \u201cThe foundation of a great film festival is made of two things: good movies and an engaged audience,\u201d he states. \u201cWe have the first part; this collection of shorts is full of gems, most of which have never screened in <strong>Illinois<\/strong> before. The second part is up to the community. Let\u2019s make this a night to remember!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One way that audience members can fulfill the goal other than enjoying the \u201ccreepy, darkly funny, and macabre\u201d offerings of KNFFF is to vote for awards while on the scene including \u201cNaughty\u201d and \u201cNice\u201d nods as well as \u201cBest of the Fest.\u201d According to the website, several films have already been nominated for technical citations \u2013 \u201cBest Direction,\u201d \u201cBest Acting,\u201d and so on \u2013 with their winners to be announced alongside the rest at the show. We have confidence that Krampus and company will provide everyone a good time at the Krampusnacht Freaky Film Festival. Doors open at <strong>6:30 p.m.<\/strong>, and the event will run from <strong>7<\/strong> to<strong> 10:30 p.m.<\/strong> Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This festival draws its name from the <strong>Krampus<\/strong>, a creature from central European folklore who acts as the shadow of <strong>St. Nicholas<\/strong> \u2013 its punishment of naughty children makes a stocking full of coal sound appealing. \u201c<strong>Krampusnacht<\/strong>\u201d is observed on <strong>December 5th<\/strong>, the night before the <strong>Feast of St. Nicholas<\/strong> on the 6th.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This year\u2019s program features two dozen short films from 9 different countries, including some produced right here in <strong>Champaign<\/strong>. The films range from horror to dark comedy, with many expertly entwining the two genres, and some incorporating twisted holiday themes.
