Director <strong>Ben Kolak<\/strong> and producer <strong>Yana Kunichoff<\/strong> of <strong>Scrappers Film Group<\/strong> <a title=\"Ben Kolak and Yana Kunichoff segment, \u2018The 21st\u2019 :: Illinois Public Media\" href=\"https:\/\/will.illinois.edu\/21stshow\/program\/stateville-calling-a-documentary-on-prison-reform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">spoke to with <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The 21st<\/span><\/strong> on <strong>WILL-AM 580<\/strong> earlier toda<\/span>y<\/a> about the project, <a title=\"STATEVILLE CALLING :: Official Site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statevillecalling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">which looks at incarceration in <strong>Illinois<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and how octogenarian activist <strong>Bill Ryan<\/strong> is urging reform of an overtaxed criminal justice system and a progressive stance on senior-age prisoners who would do no harm in society if granted clemency or parole. Individuals profiled in the story live in facilities such as the all-men <strong>Stateville Correctional Center<\/strong> in <strong>Joliet<\/strong> and the all-women <strong>Logan Correctional Center<\/strong> in <strong>Lincoln<\/strong>. This is considered the second episode from the second season of <strong>REEL MIDWEST<\/strong>, which began in earnest back in November with a one-off airing of <strong>ALL THE QUEEN\u2019S HORSES<\/strong>, and no future episodes are listed on the WILL programming schedule. However, more independently-produced content will appear as part of other syndicated showcases during the next few days. WILL is set to broadcast the next episode of the long-running <strong>INDEPENDENT LENS<\/strong> on <strong>Monday, February 3, 9 p.m.<\/strong>, in which <a title=\"LEFTOVER WOMEN on INDEPENDENT LENS :: PBS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/films\/leftover-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">LEFTOVER WOMEN<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> follows the lives of three successful young women in <strong>China<\/strong><\/span><\/a> who are stigmatized for not being married; it is directed by <strong>Shosh Shlam<\/strong> and <strong>Hilla Medalia<\/strong>. The <strong>Urbana<\/strong>-based <strong>PBS<\/strong> affiliate will also play the most recent episode of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"FILM-MAKER :: South Florida PBS \u2013 WPBT\/WXEL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southfloridapbs.org\/film-maker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <strong>South Florida PBS<\/strong> show <strong>FILM-MAKER<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on <strong>Sunday, February 2, 11:30 p.m.<\/strong>, in which segment director <strong>Christopher Ahrendt<\/strong> depicts in <strong>AGAINST THE GRAIN<\/strong> how a retrospective movie house in <strong>Coral Gables, Florida<\/strong>, keeps the art and technique of film projection alive; the staff is gearing up to present a freshly-struck 70mm print of <strong>2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY<\/strong> for its community at the time of taping.
