{"id":1319,"date":"2009-10-29T22:32:33","date_gmt":"2009-10-30T04:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=1319"},"modified":"2014-09-06T14:56:45","modified_gmt":"2014-09-06T20:56:45","slug":"it-was-10-years-2-hours-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=1319","title":{"rendered":"It was 10 years, 2 hours ago&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8230;that I sat in the lobby of the <strong>New Art Theater<\/strong> in downtown <strong>Champaign <\/strong>with operator <strong>Tom Angelica<\/strong> as well as <strong>Grace Giorgio, Eric Fisher<\/strong>, and the other core <strong>Freaky Film Festival<\/strong> volunteers as the opening night feature <strong>pURe kILLjoy<\/strong> finished unspooling and freaking out our audience. We had just cleaned up pizza boxes and other refuse so when the movie let out things would look back to normal. Not that <em>anything <\/em>involving an event called the Freaky Film Festival could be construed as normal, including <strong>kILLjoy <\/strong>which I skipped because it had already bent my mind via screener videotape (remember those?), although I stayed in the auditorium long enough to catch the film short that officially kicked things off for the third annual go-round, <strong>RESURRECTION <\/strong>directed by <strong>Leslie Nagy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That night proved to be even more of a happy anomaly for myself. Somehow, the pizza buried the butterflies released in my stomach just prior to the films during opening remarks, when Giorgio invited me up front to introduce a new C-U publication designed to address exactly the sort of out-there <em>oeuvre <\/em>which powered Freaky Films and the United States&#8217; burgeoning underground film festival circuit of the Nineties. Our popular local event provided a refreshing antithesis to commercial movie-making and gladly went places that neither the cinema studies department at the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> or the brand-new <strong>Overlooked Film Festival<\/strong> hosted by <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong> would <em>ever <\/em>go. The same could easily be said for that which I held up high so everyone in the SRO crowd could see:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"MICRO-FILM #1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_MICROFILM01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"582\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It certainly qualified as a high point in my life, especially given that my force of will pretty much pushed this issue out the door and into existence more than anything else.
