Don’t get your hopes up too high, friends. Many, many <\/em>cows will have to come home before the University of Illinois<\/strong> grants us our collecitve secret wish – that they open up the floodgates of year-round movie nirvana by launching a filmmaking school – but at least they’ve corrected one little organizational wrong and moved the Cinema Studies program under the protective wing of the College of Media<\/strong>. C-U Blogfidential<\/strong> friend Laura Zinger<\/strong> just alerted us that the department now known as Media & Cinema Studies<\/strong> is looking to fill an assistant professor position “with an emphasis on cinema studies.” Call me crazy, but wouldn’t cinema studies be what one would emphasize when teaching in Cinema Studies? I guess that’s different enough from “emphasizing Media<\/em> Studies” to make the distinction…<\/p>\n

Anyway, if you have a Ph.D. and the appropriate skillz, you can find the text of the official announcement after the jump and respond in kind to the College of Media if interested. Just make sure to save us a few aisle seats for your first lecture.<\/p>\n

Position Announcement<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Department of Media and Cinema Studies<\/strong> at the College of Media<\/strong> at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign<\/strong> seeks to fill one entry-level, tenure-track assistant professor position, with an emphasis in cinema studies, beginning August 16, 2010<\/strong>. Desired qualifications include a Ph.D. in cinema studies, media studies, communications, or a related field; and evidence of excellent scholarship and teaching experience. A research specialization in the study of film and one or more of the following is desirable:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Convergence culture, participatory media, media activism
\n\u2022 Digital\/new media
\n\u2022 Queer theory and sexualities
\n\u2022 Race, diaspora, transnational
\n\u2022 Area Studies, specifically Latin America, Africa and East Asia<\/p>\n

Responsibilities include interdisciplinary scholarly research and teaching in both undergraduate and doctoral programs, including a vibrant graduate minor in cinema studies. Salary: competitive, based on experience and qualifications. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.<\/p>\n
