(Photo: Jason Pankoke)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_arttheater_marquee_closedcloseup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I think it will not take long at all before we truly feel the withdrawal from having our normal interactions with our community and the world reduced in dramatic fashion thanks to the motions being exercised by city officials, university higher-ups, business owners, organization directors, and people like you and me. The busy and mobile lifestyle that many of us engage in daily is<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) :: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health &amp; Human Services\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> being rightfully discouraged to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus (<strong>COVID-19<\/strong>) now that it has reached the Americas<\/a><\/span>, and we can\u2019t help but be jarred when seeing the cancellations and postponements as they come from all corners so quickly. We need to remind ourselves and each other to be diligent on self-cleanliness, changes in local policies, availability of wellness resources, volunteer self-isolation, and \u201csocial distancing\u201d when not isolated and moving about in public with necessity. As well, we must do what we can to help our friends and neighbors in need. Social media and smart phones will be vital tools in this transformed and temporary society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Is it superfluous to talk about movies and entertainment right now? Hardly. Industries that employ thousands and media that engages millions will be affected by the shutdown even if the repercussions in areas like <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> aren\u2019t notably drastic except in the exhibition sphere. Studios have been encouraged to send their new and recent releases to the streaming services early where audiences secluded at home can watch them safely. <a title=\"\u2018Cinemas close nationwide, Disney postpones 'Black Widow'\u2019 by Jake Coyle, AP :: The Pantagraph\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pantagraph.com\/entertainment\/movies\/cinemas-close-nationwide-disney-postpones-black-widow\/article_3169ad28-f2e7-58ec-8390-169bf1752b96.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This is because the multiplex chains have suspended their schedules until the end of March at the least<\/span><\/a>, effectively closing AMC\u2019s <strong>Champaign 13<\/strong> and Goodrich\u2019s <strong>Savoy 16<\/strong>. Independent movie houses like the <strong>Virginia<\/strong>, <strong>Normal<\/strong>, and <strong>Avon <\/strong>have also locked up, following suit after <a title=\"\u20182020 Roger Ebert\u2019s Film Festival canceled\u2019 by Craig Chamberlain :: University of Illinois News Service\" href=\"https:\/\/news.illinois.edu\/view\/6367\/807241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Chaz Ebert<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> and the \u201c<strong>Ebertfest<\/strong>\u201d contingent decided to cancel for the year<\/span><\/a> due to <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> protocol. We understand why this is being done and past yearnings for \u201cthat communal experience\u201d in film is moot for the moment. Congregation and coronavirus shouldn\u2019t mix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We can\u2019t say that we don\u2019t have options, the very options that have been threatening the viability of theatrical screening according to many an article and report. Programming exists for us <em>en masse<\/em> to watch on streaming, free-with-ads websites, and broadcast channels so we can pass the hours when it\u2019s appropriate to dial down. Those who still keep a physical media library might have a field day or few in their future and those who can work remotely will do just that, even when it\u2019s tempting to crank the tunes, dive into immersive video games, or vegetate with video. It is a lifestyle modification that is not wholly disagreeable to some if the comforts, flexibility, and self-discipline exist. We otherwise await further notice from medical and health officials along with the authorities. Don\u2019t think for a minute that we\u2019re on vacation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All that said, my post is really about something other than compromise in the face of a pandemic. I hinted in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"C-U cinema tumbles hard into fall :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong> piece from a few months ago<\/a><\/span> that I felt a bit of unease in certain developments. Specifically, it was the closing of the <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> at <strong>Halloween<\/strong>. Personally, it was the derailment of the <strong>New Art Film Festival<\/strong> as a direct result of that decision. Closer to the present, building news overseas of coronavirus spread in <strong>China<\/strong>, <strong>Italy<\/strong>, and other countries ran parallel to additional developments in our backyard along the film culture front \u2013 some important, some a mere digression \u2013 that I don\u2019t want to be lost in the shuffling priorities and focus. Elements of our so-called scene have been put on notice, reshaped beyond our control, or allowed to simply crumble down. I want to share my observations in case any of them merit a further look if we must discuss compromise and rebuilding in our cultural landscape.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many in Champaign-Urbana have noted and bemoaned over time the constantly shifting array of spaces for music performance and the sentiment must be extended to the availability of stage and screen. At the end of last month, <strong>Goodrich Quality Theaters<\/strong> announced they would be filing for bankruptcy protection; <a title=\"\u2018Community concerned after theater company files for bankruptcy\u2019 by Courtney Bunting :: WCIA\/IllinoisHomepage.net\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wcia.com\/local\/community-concerned-after-theater-company-files-for-bankruptcy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">as reported by <strong>WCIA-TV<\/strong>, the fate of the Savoy 16 worries its loyal customers<\/span><\/a> (and, I\u2019m sure, town officials) as it is one of a few entertainment destinations with a <strong>Savoy<\/strong> address. \u201cWe will be temporarily closed during this challenging time,\u201d says a statement that appears on the company website as of <strong>Tuesday, March 17<\/strong>. \u201cTheaters will remain closed until state and local government health departments deem appropriate to open for business.\u201d The CEO and board must now be sweating a bit with insult added to injury. <strong>AMC<\/strong>, the largest theater chain in the country, also <a title=\"\u2018AMC Theatres to Close for Six to 12 Weeks\u2019 by Gene Maddaus :: Variety\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/amc-theatres-closing-coronavirus-1203536564\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">closed their cinemas to the public on Tuesday with this klutzy statement<\/span><\/a> as shared by <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Variety<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Virginia Theater might weather a double whammy if its owner, the <strong>Champaign Park District<\/strong>, sticks to its plans. Theater director <strong>Steven Bentz<\/strong> and team had been set to close down the Virginia for two or three months after the finale of their 2019-2020 season, a screening of the <strong>Walt Disney Studios<\/strong> classic <strong>FANTASIA<\/strong> on <strong>Saturday, June 20<\/strong>, to have a completely new sound system installed. All of a sudden, \u201c[a]ll Virginia Theatre events <strong>March 14, 2020<\/strong>, through <strong>May 10, 2020<\/strong>, are postponed,\u201d according to a pop-up statement on their website and <a title=\"\u2018Champaign Park District\u2019s Virginia Theatre to Suspend Public Events\u2019 :: The Virginia Theatre\" href=\"https:\/\/thevirginia.org\/champaign-park-districts-virginia-theatre-to-suspend-public-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">a press release that details events being pushed back<\/span><\/a>. CPD likely has the funding in hand to cover wages and overhead during the planned break, but will a lack of <strong>Roger Ebert&#8217;s Film Festival<\/strong> and other shows in the present be a hurdle for the Virginia leading into their 100th anniversary year? Potentially losing half a 12-month calendar in ticket sales does not sound comfortable for a non-profit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Elsewhere in downtown Champaign, we know the verdict and repercussions. <strong>The Art Film Foundation<\/strong>, operators of the <strong>Art Theater<\/strong> for not very long, <a title=\"\u2018Foundation reaches deal with Art Theater landlord over unpaid rent\u2019 by Ben Zigterman :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/arts-entertainment\/film-television\/foundation-reaches-deal-with-art-theater-landlord-over-unpaid-rent\/article_b6d3c599-9401-575b-ac39-bd4eb30dbad0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">is dissolved<\/span><\/a> and <strong>David Kraft<\/strong>, owner of the Art Theater building for maybe too long, <a title=\"\u2018Owner of Art Theater building selling property, business for $2 million\u2019 by Ben Zigterman :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/arts-entertainment\/film-television\/owner-of-art-theater-building-selling-property-business-for-million\/article_c9401655-8d46-5009-9db1-ffeb42f7cf50.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">has assumed control of physical and proprietary assets<\/span><\/a> of the Art. The latter wasted no time in putting it all up for sale at a cool $2 million. I can make an educated guess that his price is due to several factors \u2013 <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Historic Preservation \u2013 Local Landmarks :: Planning and Development Department, City of Champaign, IL\" href=\"https:\/\/champaignil.gov\/planning\/historic-preservation\/local-landmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the building\u2019s \u201cprotected\u201d status<\/a><\/span>, its visible location in a strengthening business district, potential income from the apartments upstairs, the \u201ccomplete package\u201d of equipment and inventory that may woo entrepreneurs \u2013 but I don\u2019t expect a quick resolution. As much as I hope the \u201cArt Lives\u201d another day, I still bristle at the thought of how much citizen money and loving lip service we handed over to the Art during its recent cooperative and non-profit phases. Idealism does not automatically beget sustainability, while a return to for-profit ownership is no certain fix in a cantankerous industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Transformations have also marked downtown. <strong>SoDo Theatre<\/strong> ceased after more than a decade in existence as reported by the <a title=\"\u2018SoDo Theatre's closing shows what's good for building owners is bad for theater groups\u2019 by Anthony Zilis :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/arts-entertainment\/theater\/sodo-theatre-s-closing-shows-what-s-good-for-building\/article_d39e2fee-68c2-5642-8b3c-2c540d1d8628.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"\u2018Upcoming Closure of SoDo Theater, Champaign-Urbana Community Theater Companies Seeking More Space Options\u2019 by Laura Weisskopf Bleill :: ChambanaMoms\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chambanamoms.com\/2020\/03\/03\/champaign-urbana-community-theater-community-seeking-more-space-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">ChambanaMoms<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. Managed by <strong>Class Act<\/strong> artistic director <strong>Jackie Lowenstein<\/strong>, the offbeat venue served as a home for local performance groups such as Class Act, <strong>Zoo Improv, Twin City Theatre Company<\/strong>, and the <strong>Prompting Theatre<\/strong> in the most communal do-it-yourself sense. As new tenants set up a novelty bar within walking distance from others of its ilk, I\u2019d like to remember the good times including the occasions when cinema made its presence known. <strong>Champaign Movie Makers<\/strong> met at SoDo monthly for a long spell. In December, CMM organizer <strong>Thomas Nicol<\/strong> hosted <a title=\"KNFFF to freak us good on Dec. 7 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13086\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the first <strong>Krampusnacht Freeky Film Festival <\/strong><\/span><\/a>there.<strong> Lisa Cerezo<\/strong> and yours truly put on a public domain and screen oddities show at SoDo called <strong>Time Traveling Cinema<\/strong> for a year. I\u2019m sure there is more slipping the mind. May the companies rebound and their talent continue to incubate and inspire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Two blocks north and east of the former SoDo, a remnant of a past era breathed its last for what seemed like a millisecond. Much of the building that most recently housed <strong>51 Main<\/strong> and <strong>Memphis on Main<\/strong> is being renovated by the business group behind <a title=\"\u2018The Venue CU plans to be the go-to spot for weddings\u2019 by Ben Zigterman :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/business\/entrepreneurs\/the-venue-cu-plans-to-be-the-go-to-spot\/article_b577777f-27e4-56c6-8fa9-87b42a5d7a96.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Venue CU<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">, an upcoming events-and-weddings space<\/span><\/a>. This has involved stripping down the face of the entire structure and, thanks to quick-thinking friends about town like <a title=\"Photo shared January 2, 2020, at Champaign Urbana History group @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/ChampaignUrbana\/permalink\/2536664599765427\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Matthis Helmick<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Check out the old Illini Theater marquee\u2019 by Patrick Singer :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/smilepolitely.com\/splog\/check_out_the_old_illini_theater_marquee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Smile Politely<\/span><\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Seth Fein<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, we received one last look at the long-covered impressions left by marquee lettering when <a title=\"Illini Theater, Champaign, Illinois :: Cinema Treasures\" href=\"http:\/\/cinematreasures.org\/theaters\/4591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <strong>Illini Theater<\/strong> showed adult fare at that address<\/span><\/a>. The marquee and much of the interior structure is now history, I saw for myself when I walked past the construction a few weeks ago, but at least the new owners are incorporating history into their plans. A ballroom in The Venue will apparently be named after the <strong>Varsity Theater<\/strong>, the first to operate behind that marquee and one of the first in Champaign to book movies at the start of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What I\u2019ve recounted so far is just a handful of the question marks bouncing around my brain that are easy to acknowledge since they are rather dramatic and timely. Our wounded film culture runs deeper than the nearest theater fa\u00e7ade, however, and as I bumble through the various scenarios of what is happening in certain facets, I know I have no control of or answers for any of it:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now that UIUC has <a title=\"Events :: University of Illinois COVID-19 Information Center\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19.illinois.edu\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">directed their departments and services to cancel on-campus activities for the remaining spring term<\/span><\/a>, will student and community groups like <strong>Illini Film &amp; Video<\/strong>, Champaign Movie Makers, <strong>For Art\u2019s Sake, C-U Cinefile, Workshop Films Collective, Illinifest<\/strong>, and <strong>Community Supported Film<\/strong> spring back easily during the next academic year?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now that <a title=\"Post shared December 4, 2019, at Pens to Lens page @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PensToLens\/posts\/2750602195003105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Pens to Lens<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> has announced it is solely presenting student-made films<\/span><\/a> in 2020, assuming a P2L event even takes place in 2020, what is the future of their unique filmmaker-led and student-written productions given they were in short supply at the 2019 gala?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now that <a title=\"\u2018Cornering business: Between new bank, CVS, strip mall, things are busy at Springfield and Mattis\u2019 by Ben Zigterman :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/business\/cornering-business-between-new-bank-cvs-strip-mall-things-are\/article_cd488f7e-3e8b-5305-935a-fa1c2bd28069.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Chase Bank<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> has moved barely a block north into its brand-new location<\/span><\/a> near the <strong>Springfield<\/strong> and <strong>Mattis<\/strong> intersection in Champaign, when will <strong>CVS<\/strong> take over their property and tear down the old building that was originally built by <strong>National General Theatres<\/strong> in the 1960s as the <strong>Fox Country Fair<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now that <em>we the people<\/em> are supposed to <a title=\"\u2018Gov. Pritzker issued a stay-at-home order. What does that mean?\u2019 by Jamie Munks and Antonia Ayres-Brown :: The Chicago Tribune\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/coronavirus\/ct-coronavirus-what-is-shelter-in-place-20200320-rvyzf7h24ff5tfnvve5kz6g6b4-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">stay away from one another if at all possible and until further notice due to virus fears and proactive \u201cshelter at home\u201d measures<\/span><\/a>, even when holding down \u201cessential\u201d jobs at the workplace and in the field, how do movie-makers \u2026 <em>well<\/em> \u2026 make movies? (Hint: You don\u2019t, particularly if you are a professional drawing wages from the work you perform. Wring your hands, folks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When our society regains its composure and restores a sense of balance in already uncertain times, we will have plenty to sort out from all angles. The people integral to the projects that I\u2019ve mentioned and others I haven\u2019t addressed will figure out their next moves with intelligence, drive, and hands-on hustle, I\u2019m sure of it. The only tenet that is guaranteed as we progress to the future is the future will not absolutely return to what becomes our immediate past. Just as well, I say.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The cinema has evolved ever since inventors tested the various prototypes in the closing years of the 19th century on bewildered colleagues and amazed nickelodeon audiences. So will its local application and appreciation. Yet, the film culture we perpetuate these days in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, is a very odd duck in my 2020 vision and I\u2019m not quite sure where it\u2019s at. How I\u2019ll process it in my own heart and conscience remains to be seen. How it plays out on <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong> and in other relative corners will become known when we get there.
