Nonfiction films can also provide dynamic records of particular points in history where none might have existed before. We\u2019ve gone over <a title=\"WILL-TV to run topical indie docs :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">recent programs that WILL has picked up for local broadcast<\/span><\/a> as well as <a title=\"COUNTRY to encore on WILL-TV :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">produced in-house to be distributed to fellow <strong>PBS<\/strong> stations<\/span><\/a>, their common thread being a universal focus with Midwest roots. Outside of the efforts made by WILL and <a title=\"Big Ten Network Academic Programming playlist @ YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLCCF81FEA0482B965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> branch of the <strong>Big Ten Network<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, with occasional special programs appearing on the area\u2019s network affiliates and public access channels, we don\u2019t really see an outpouring of long-form and in-depth content about, well, <em>us<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s clear we must look to the independents who take up the slack in their own work when they latch on to local personalities and issues worth an investigation. Today, I\u2019d like to shine the spotlight on the makers of two upcoming films that feature subject matter directly connected to our communities. One is about an unfortunate blight in early 20th century race relations that some would rather forget while others actively remember as a cautionary tale. The other is about an idiosyncratic musician whose shortened time on Earth should be celebrated and distanced from a professional rift that overshadowed his solo career. Both can benefit from your attention and monetary support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Within the past two weeks, <a title=\"Crowdson Creative Video Production :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imaketv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Crowdson Creative Video Production<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in <strong>Springfield<\/strong> has released a second teaser trailer and launched a crowdsourcing effort for their long-in-making documentary called <strong>WHITE HEAT\/BLACK ASHES<\/strong>. The piece aims to give African-American residents a strong voice in revisiting the city\u2019s \u201crace riot\u201d of August 1908 that sent a shock wave through prior generations of their families and neighbors. The sorry incident, involving thousands of white townspeople inciting mob action against black households and business districts that ended in lynching, death, and property destruction, lead directly to the formation of the <strong>National Association for the Advancement of Colored People<\/strong> (NAACP) and its ongoing fight for the civil rights of African Americans. <a title=\"WHITE HEAT\/BLACK ASHES trailer 2 @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WhiteHeatBlackAshes\/videos\/414420179424162\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">If the social media quotes in that trailer are any indication<\/span><\/a>, an updated reflection on the riot is sorely needed as some folks have yet to truly comprehend how badly <a title=\"\u2018Efforts to Rebuild after Springfield\u2019s 1908 Race Riot Still Ongoing\u2019 by Rachel Otwell :: NPR Illinois\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nprillinois.org\/post\/efforts-rebuild-after-springfield-s-1908-race-riot-still-ongoing-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">its repercussions continue to affect Springfield in the present<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FWhiteHeatBlackAshes%2Fvideos%2F543430029830681%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=450\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Much has been accomplished since <strong>WHITE HEAT\/BLACK ASHES<\/strong> producer <strong>Brian Crowdson<\/strong> resumed work on it in 2018; <a title=\"\u2018Documentary maker hopes \u2018to open some eyes\u2019 about 1908 Race Riot\u2019 by Steven Speare :: The State Journal-Register\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sj-r.com\/news\/20190828\/documentary-maker-hopes-to-open-some-eyes-about-1908-race-riot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">according to the Springfield <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">State Journal-Register<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, he originally intended to release a version on the 100th anniversary of the riot in 2008. As seen in the first trailer, several interviews have been recorded. They include historian <strong>Kathryn Harris<\/strong>, author <strong>James Lowden<\/strong>, artist <strong>Preston Jackson<\/strong>, former Springfield NAACP president <strong>Ken Page<\/strong>, and <strong>Betty L. Thompson<\/strong> and <strong>Charles Wilson<\/strong>, great grandchildren of <a title=\"\u2018Springfield race riot of 1908 - William Donnegan\u2019 :: Wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Springfield_race_riot_of_1908#William_Donnegan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the successful black businessman <strong>William K.H. Donnegan<\/strong><\/span><\/a> who was hung from a tree across the street from his home by the mob. <a title=\"WHITE HEAT\/BLACK ASHES fundraiser @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/donate\/1551554258343555\/797253114118696\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Crowdson is aiming to raise $5,000 so his firm can afford to scan and colorize vintage photographs<\/span><\/a> that will be accessed from the holdings of the <strong>Sangamon Valley Collection<\/strong> at the <strong>Lincoln Library<\/strong> of Springfield like the one included here. The former has pieces about performers like <strong>Michael McDermott<\/strong> and <strong>The Vulgar Boatmen<\/strong> under his belt, while the latter\u2019s track record includes works on independent and fringe musicians such as <strong>Lydia Loveless, The Replacements, Grant Hart<\/strong>, and <strong>Archers of Loaf<\/strong>. The gifted songwriter and multi-instrumentalist <strong>Jay Bennett<\/strong>, an <strong>Illinois<\/strong> native who <a title=\"\u2018Jay Bennett, Ex-Wilco Member, Dies at 45\u2019 by Michael D. Ayers :: Billboard\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/268548\/jay-bennett-ex-wilco-member-dies-at-45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">passed away at his <strong>Urbana<\/strong> home in 2009 due to medical complications<\/span><\/a>, is deserving of the nod. Appearing between the official and <strong>Kickstarter<\/strong> teaser trailers are the former Wilco drummer <strong>Ken Coomer<\/strong>, <strong>Death Ships<\/strong> vocalist <strong>Dan Maloney<\/strong>, the just-retired <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Chicago Tribune<\/span><\/strong> music columnist <strong>Greg Kot<\/strong>, and faces familiar to C-U residents: <strong>Don Gerard<\/strong>, a recent <strong>Champaign<\/strong> mayor and former band member with Bennett, <strong>Chris Green<\/strong>, an animal rights lawyer and former Wilco tour manager, and <strong>Mark Rubel<\/strong>, a recording studio instructor in <strong>Nashville<\/strong> and former owner of <strong>Pogo Studios<\/strong> in Champaign. While Bechard and Uhter completed a successful campaign to cover early costs, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"WHERE ARE YOU, JAY BENNETT campaign @ Kickstarter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/gormanbechard\/where-are-you-jay-bennett-documentary-needs-animation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they want to reach a $22,500 stretch goal to pay for final tweaks, legal fees, and animated graphics<\/a><\/span>. It is clear that most smaller-scale filmmakers have been temporarily put out of business due to the federal and state restrictions meant to contain the COVID-19 virus; Crowdson admitted to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong> that his company has essentially \u201cshut down\u201d as a direct result. There is no reason for us to not encourage them to push forth with their own projects if they can do so autonomously and safely, even if it consists of resource-building for the near future. I\u2019m sure that many of us want to see these documentaries completed, distributed, and successful in their aims sooner rather than later.
