Both the coronavirus information page kept by the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Coronavirus information :: Champaign-Urbana Public Health District\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c-uphd.org\/champaign-urbana-illinois-coronavirus-information.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Champaign-Urbana Public Health District<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and an animated map embedded on the response page from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Coronavirus response :: State of Illinois\" href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.illinois.gov\/s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the <strong>Illinois<\/strong> government<\/a><\/span> show that <strong>Champaign County<\/strong> has weathered more virus activity than its neighboring counties by far. Why is it the case? Maybe, contagious folks go directly from Chicagoland to <strong>Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> more often than other downstate cities. Maybe, our neighbors are more diligent in being tested, thereby increasing the total number of diagnosed cases. Maybe, we will never have enough contact tracing performed to determine the answers. All I know is I plan to wear the damn mask in public for the common good, follow social distancing guidelines until national health officials say otherwise, and adhere to the adjustments made by any establishment I visit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Opening back up or expanding services under \u201cRestore Illinois Phase 4\u201d is also no guarantee that all businesses will truly be back in business, including theatrical exhibitors. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Calendar: June 26-July 2, 2020 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skim last week\u2019s <strong>Calendar<\/strong> and you will see<\/a><\/span> the area\u2019s drive-ins are feasting on catalog titles while indoor screens remain dark. An exception is the <strong>Roxy Cinemas<\/strong> in <strong>Ottawa<\/strong>, which is within driving distance of <strong>MFHQ Remote<\/strong> but too far away from the C-U for a night out. What will it even look like once we\u2019re allowed back in? <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The News-Gazette<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Phase 4 rules: Restaurants, theaters, gyms, movie theaters and more\u2019 by Jeff D'Alessio :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/coronavirus\/phase-4-rules-restaurants-theaters-gyms-movie-theaters-and-more\/article_4e18ba42-e3af-54b4-b823-cb8d960a9b26.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gave us an idea when they shared the revised rules<\/a><\/span>; \u201cMovie Theaters and Performing arts\u201d etiquette involves the expected modifications to keep patrons and workers safe including spaced-out ticket lines and seating, lower maximum capacity per show, no refillable food or drink containers, and staggered entry and exit. I wonder how much total effort will be put into maintaining this barometer, especially at a multiplex. Not helping consumer confidence, <strong>AMC Theaters<\/strong> recently let it slip they would allow mask wearing to slide before <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018AMC Theatres reverses course and will require customers to wear masks\u2019 by Frank Pallotta :: CNN\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/19\/media\/amc-theatres-masks\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">walking back the policy due to criticism from all corners<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The largest movie theater chain in the <strong>United States<\/strong> also <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018AMC Theatres Shifts Reopening Date To July 30 After \u2018Tenet\u2019 &amp; \u2018Mulan\u2019 Delay\u2019 by Anthony D'Alessandro :: Deadline\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/06\/amc-theatres-reopening-new-date-tenet-mulan-1202972756\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keeps backpedaling on when they will reopen worldwide<\/a><\/span>, recently resetting that date as <strong>July 30<\/strong> due to various circumstances. Well, that\u2019s not exactly true. What <em>is<\/em> predictable is the smaller houses in our communities are being forced to innovate as they struggle to float themselves in a downturn that keeps elongating due to coronavirus fears. Snacks and viewing choices are available from the <strong>Virginia Theatre<\/strong> of Champaign, closed for renovations that were planned well before the pandemic, and one should <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Virginia Theatre :: Home Page\" href=\"https:\/\/thevirginia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">watch their website<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Virginia Theatre @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheVirginiaTheatre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Facebook<\/strong> carefully<\/a><\/span> for the changing details. On most Fridays and Saturdays from now until the end of August, with the exception of the <strong>Fourth of July<\/strong> weekend, the Virginia is offering \u201cCurbside Concessions\u201d of fresh popcorn, drinks, and candy that can be ordered same day between <strong>3<\/strong> and <strong>6 p.m.<\/strong> and then picked up between <strong>4<\/strong> and <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Online screenings :: The Virginia Theatre\" href=\"https:\/\/thevirginia.org\/event\/virtual-virginia-theatre-2020-06-26\/all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curated streaming rentals are offered through an event page<\/a><\/span> and may change every Friday; last week\u2019s menu included documentaries on <strong>Roger Ebert<\/strong> (<strong>LIFE ITSELF<\/strong>) and <strong>The Band<\/strong> (<strong>ONCE WERE BROTHERS<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In <strong>Decatur<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Avon Theater :: Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theavon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the family-operated <strong>Avon Theater<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is working through a trying stretch after being closed since the spring. Intending to reopen last Friday in concert with Phase 4, the Avon had already lit up their marquee with <strong>TROLLS WORLD TOUR, IRRESISTIBLE<\/strong>, and <strong>THE GOONIES<\/strong> before discovering at the last minute an electrical problem that rendered all their digital projectors unusable. Technicians from <strong>Chicago<\/strong> will help them sort it out and install what\u2019s needed to resume shows, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Avon Theater @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheAvonTheatre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to their Facebook feed<\/a><\/span>, but it means clientele isn\u2019t being entertained and the theater isn\u2019t covering expenses like usual. The setback came less than a week after the Hustons launched <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Avon Theater fundraising campaign @ GoFundMe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/help-movie-theater-magic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a <strong>GoFundMe<\/strong> campaign with a $30,000 goal<\/a><\/span> to make up for revenue lost while shut down. We hope that combined support from Avonians everywhere will erase the deficit in quick order and restore good cheer on <strong>North Water Street<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A third establishment housed in a century-old venue will not open again. Three weeks ago, the board of directors at the <strong>Orpheum Children\u2019s Science Museum<\/strong> of Champaign, established in 1994, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018\u2018Lights out for Orpheum: 'The board ... decided that it was best if we close it now'\u2019 by Ben Zigterman :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/coronavirus\/lights-out-for-orpheum-the-board-decided-that-it-was-best-if-we-close-it\/article_14ac0b39-fdff-5b4c-8781-6ea74b5dea48.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced it would cease operations and put up for sale its building<\/a><\/span>, the former <strong>Orpheum Theatre<\/strong> first opened in 1914. They provided a lively and educational outlet for our youth to learn about the world around them via rotating exhibits, colorful presentations, and special events; <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Orpheum Children\u2019s Science Museum @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OrpheumMuseum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it is clear from Facebook<\/a><\/span> how much care had been poured into their efforts. However, when compared to similar hands-on offerings in other cities, the confined Orpheum floor plan and a budget collected through admissions, grants, donations, rentals, and fundraisers did not allow for breadth and building maintenance. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Let\u2019s take the future of the Orpheum into our own hands\u2019 by the editors :: Smile Politely\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smilepolitely.com\/opinion\/lets_take_the_future_of_the_orpheum_into_our_own_hands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Old discussion was revived by <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Smile Politely<\/span><\/strong> recently<\/a><\/span> about the possible benefit of separating the museum from the theater so both could prosper, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Inside Out | A short history lesson on the Orpheum building\u2019 by Perry C. Morris\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/living\/family\/inside-out-a-short-history-lesson-on-the-orpheum-building\/article_cda8ccc3-314e-5a8b-b7d9-d80f7a237235.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">echoed by Orpheum friend <strong>Perry C. Morris<\/strong> in a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News-Gazette<\/span> commentary<\/a><\/span> run on Sunday, but the pandemic has apparently tapped out their resources. It is a big loss despite the compromises.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Luckily, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Local landmarks :: Planning and Development Department, City of Champaign\" href=\"https:\/\/champaignil.gov\/planning\/historic-preservation\/local-landmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Orpheum and <strong>Art<\/strong> theaters are registered historic places<\/a><\/span> that can\u2019t be demolished or greatly altered, but what is their best use going forward? We should first help the surviving businesses to regain strength and then evaluate. The motion picture industry as defined by American practices could be substantially changed when the masks and gloves come off, so to speak. It may well be time for broad improvements in how the industry workforce is treated, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Dear Hollywood: We Don\u2019t Want to \u2018Go Back to Normal.\u2019 Normal Wasn\u2019t Working.\u2019 By Zack Arnold :: Optimize Yourself\" href=\"https:\/\/optimizeyourself.me\/dear-hollywood-normal-wasnt-working\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as argued by television editor <strong>Zack Arnold<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (<strong>COBRA KAI, BURN NOTICE<\/strong>), which reconciles everything from impossible work schedules to ingrained issues of sexism, racism, and ageism. It may also open up opportunity, <a title=\"\u2018After coronavirus, cinema may never be the same again\u2019 by Catherine Shoard :: The Guardian\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/jun\/29\/coronavirus-cinemas-business-models-creativity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Catherine Shoard<\/strong> suggests<\/span><\/a>, to envision new kinds of distribution divorced from the major chains that actually favor diverse storytelling and original voices. It would be refreshing for waves of conviction, imagination, and dedication to trickle down to all the laborers, managers, and entrepreneurs among us to <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"C-U cinema hits a slippery slope :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">give the local movie milieu a fresh kick in the ass<\/a><\/span>.
