We already witnessed the first such attempt via Facebook<\/strong> on Saturday, August 15<\/strong>, when the Pens to Lens<\/strong> \u201cdigital gala\u201d presented their most kid-central edition to date<\/a><\/span>. I believe we haven\u2019t had a similar offering since the online version of the University of Illinois<\/strong> student showcase Illini Film Fest<\/strong> in May and the Insect Fear Film Festival<\/strong> at the UI Foellinger Auditorium<\/strong> back in February. Others plan to move forward as well with adaptations of events once meant for public consumption before the pandemic set in, starting with this weekend\u2019s Flatlands Dance Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Choice short subjects from the world over will alternate with Zoom<\/strong> interviews between filmmakers and host Laura Chiaramonte<\/strong>, festival director and dance instructor at UIUC; a curated set live streams on Vimeo<\/strong> later tonight, Friday, September 4<\/strong>, starting at 7 p.m.<\/strong>, while the competition section broadcasts from the same Vimeo account tomorrow night, Saturday, September 5<\/strong>, also at 7 p.m.<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, both free of charge with donations accepted. Coming soon to test this new model for presentation further are the Dead in Decatur International Film Festival<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in October and the Pygmalion<\/strong> cultural extravaganza of Champaign-Urbana<\/strong> at September\u2019s end. Recent publicity for the latter revealed a modest line-up of talent across several disciplines including a handful of audio-visual components<\/a><\/span> that include the WILL-TV<\/strong> special ILLINOIS COUNTRY<\/strong> with discussion on the music business, an awareness raiser for the LGBTQ+ themed documentary JIMMY IN SAIGON<\/strong> with filmmaker Peter McDowell<\/strong> and author Dan Savage<\/strong>, and a retrospect screening of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE<\/strong> featuring actors Jon Heder, Efren Ram\u00edrez<\/strong>, and Jon Gries<\/strong>.
