(Photo: courtesy River City Productions via Facebook)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/Images\/CUBlog Art\/cu_peoriaTV_title.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although I haven\u2019t followed a television show from week to week since high school and avoid binge watch sessions to this day, I will sneak peeks if I flip to something on the flat screen that has been given a vote of confidence by friends on social media or <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018The Best TV Shows of the Decade, Ranked\u2019 By Hanh Nguyen, Ann Donahue, Ben Travers, Libby Hill, Steve Greene, Tambay Obenson, Tyler Hersko :: IndieWire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/feature\/best-tv-shows-decade-2010-2019-netflix-hbo-1202148573\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">positive coverage in the entertainment press<\/a><\/span>. I do recognize that cable channels and subscription portals have been awash with high-quality content since the rise of \u201c<strong>Peak TV<\/strong>\u201d more than a decade ago, and it has taken time for the revived medium of serial storytelling to be discussed in serious tones and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Film Independent Officials Explain How Their New TV Spirit Awards Will Work, and What\u2019s Indie TV\u2019 by Michael Schneider :: Variety\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/tv\/news\/spirit-awards-tv-rules-film-independent-1234788033\/#article-comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rewarded well past ratings, avid fandom, and <strong>Emmy<\/strong> and <strong>Golden Globe<\/strong> statues<\/a><\/span>. My long-standing preference leans towards one-and-done experiences like films, I guess.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There <em>is<\/em> a newfound attractiveness to the milieu. <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> heavyweights from <strong>Ridley Scott<\/strong> (<strong>RAISED BY WOLVES<\/strong> on <strong>HBO Max<\/strong>) and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018With Three Shows in Emmy Contention, Reese Witherspoon Has Honed Her Creative Voice\u2019 by Anne Thompson :: IndieWire\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2020\/07\/reese-witherspoon-the-morning-show-1234570746\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Reese Witherspoon<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (<strong>LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE<\/strong> on <strong>Hulu<\/strong>, <strong>THE MORNING SHOW<\/strong> on <strong>AppleTV+<\/strong>) to <strong>Jordan Peele<\/strong> (<strong>LOVECRAFT COUNTRY<\/strong> on <strong>HBO<\/strong>), <strong>Guillermo del Toro<\/strong> (<strong>TROLLHUNTERS<\/strong> on <strong>Netflix<\/strong>, <strong>THE STRAIN<\/strong> on <strong>FX<\/strong>), and <strong>Jon Favreau<\/strong> (<strong>THE MANDALORIAN<\/strong> on <strong>Disney+<\/strong>) are freely migrating to high profile, small screen fare as the stigma of network production being an inferior career choice to theatrical features has been all but erased. Their involvement entices viewers to stay glued, investors to take more chances, and talent to apply their creativity in ways that a 100-minute run time doesn\u2019t allow. In other words, serialization is the shiny new sandbox to play in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You won\u2019t see this breadth of content creation on the opposite side of the spectrum where the local network affiliates, university-based services, and community cable access channels reside with minimal resources and barely-there budgets. Fiction television is still mostly the province of professional studios, which can handle the accelerated shooting schedules that are required to pull off complete seasons with a sense of artistic continuity, reliable delivery, and slick veneer. Reading up on their goals has proven to be a nice distraction from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"It\u2019s \u2018The End\u2019 for GQT at Savoy 16 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repetitive headlines about the woes of multiplexes<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"TubiTV incorporates C-U movies :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">windfall experienced by video-on-demand providers<\/a><\/span>. From what I\u2019ve seen so far, all three camps are still in the early stages of realizing their respective projects and want to ensure they can extend the lives of their concepts. Sum total of their hard work so far \u2013 one pilot, one teaser for a pilot, one prequel series \u2013 is currently available to give viewers an idea of where they\u2019re headed, so I thought it might be fun to consider what a \u201clocal show\u201d can look like.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is the first of three <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong> posts about the demos and we\u2019ll start with the one inching ever so close to going in front of the camera. Playwright and actor <strong>Michael Mcgruder<\/strong> of <strong>River City Productions<\/strong> in <strong>Peoria<\/strong> has put together a sizeable staff to realize <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"PEORIA @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/peoriatvshow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 30-minute \u201cromance dramedy\u201d pilot named after his home town, <strong>PEORIA<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Culled from Illinois and <strong>Missouri<\/strong>, the ensemble cast includes <strong>Megan Lipski, Braxton Angle, Kerri Rae Ryan, Joanna Mills, Oscar Mansky, Kaitlyn Jackson, Chandler Smith, Megan Mockensturm<\/strong>, casting assistant <strong>Mia Katz<\/strong>, director and co-writer <strong>Raynah Unes-Reid<\/strong>, and executive producer and co-writer Mcgruder. They play young professionals, civic leaders, and service industry workers who are navigating their way through the city life where their paths will inevitably cross.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e1PJJ_SyJMw\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Providing a first impression of how the characters relate to one another is a teaser trailer, filmed during the summer with masks and social distancing practices in place. It appears here and at <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"PEORIA @ Kickstarter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/rivercityproductions\/peoria-a-comedy-drama-tv-pilot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a <strong>Kickstarter<\/strong> campaign that ended last <strong>Friday, October 2<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, and exceeded both a $20,000 initial goal and $25,000 stretch goal to cover costs associated with the pilot. I touched base with creator Mcgruder through instant messaging last week to confirm the next steps for <strong>PEORIA<\/strong>. \u201c[<strong>Friday, November 6<\/strong>] was the original premiere date but it had to be pushed back,\u201d he tells <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CUBlog<\/span><\/strong>, presumably due in large part to the <strong>COVID-19 scare<\/strong> and rescheduling. \u201cThe new pilot production dates are <strong>November 16-20<\/strong> [and the completed version] will premiere on <strong>February 26<\/strong>.\u201d It is set to air on <strong>Comcast channel 5<\/strong> in Peoria and be viewable worldwide the next day at <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"PEORIA :: Official Site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peoriatvshow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">PeoriaTVShow<\/span>.com<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. If all goes well, a series would follow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe primary intent is to distribute the show independently on TV and online,\u201d relates Mcgruder, whose Kickstarter copy promises a high-quality show that will shine a favorable light on its eponymous location and incorporate realistic themes based on issues facing the city\u2019s population today. He adds, \u201cNetflix would be for syndication after the season has already aired on Comcast,\u201d reinforcing their intent to find a home for <strong>PEORIA<\/strong> that will reach the widest possible audience.
