Probably created for class work <em>a la<\/em> <strong>MAKING A MURAL<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Student art doc wins BEA award :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the award-winning short completed by <strong>Illinois State University<\/strong> undergraduates<\/a><\/span> earlier this spring while in quarantine, <strong>ANYTHING BUT NORMAL<\/strong> briefly explores how a singular local business can survive in a modernized shopping district. Opened by <strong>Betty Anderson<\/strong> and <strong>Charlotte Radka<\/strong> (n\u00e9e Murphy) in 1968, <strong>Mother Murphy\u2019s Rock-n-Roll Emporium<\/strong> is the seminal &#8220;head shop\u201d of downstate <strong>Illinois<\/strong> that serves the offbeat needs of counterculture leaning students and residents. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018The last of an era: Mother Murphy\u2019s celebrates 50-year anniversary\u2018 by Andrew Dougherty :: The Daily Vidette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.videtteonline.com\/news\/the-last-of-an-era-mother-murphy-s-celebrates-50-year-anniversary\/article_23a11f72-19bf-11e8-acac-a3ba35f0ea88.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Between 1990 and this year, <strong>Mike Williams<\/strong> and his wife <strong>Becky<\/strong> operated the hippy mecca<\/a><\/span> from its second floor location at <strong>111 W. North Street<\/strong> in <strong>Normal<\/strong> where it shares space with its younger retail brother, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Shockwaves @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ShockwavesSkateshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Shockwaves<\/strong>, a supplier of skater gear<\/a><\/span>. One can\u2019t help but feel pretty cozy when awash in the relaxing sights, sounds, and scents of the conjoined stores, even if it\u2019s not quite one\u2019s scene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u201810 Legendary Headshops You Need to Check Out\u2019 by Alexandra White :: High Times\" href=\"https:\/\/hightimes.com\/dispensaries\/10-legendary-headshops-you-need-check-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">receiving a mention in the December 2018 issue of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">High Times<\/span><\/strong> magazine<\/a><\/span> as one of the longest-lasting joints of its kind in the <strong>United States<\/strong>, Mother Murphy\u2019s turned to face the strange changes necessary in order to continue serving its loyal clientele. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Pantagraph<\/span><\/strong> and other news media <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Mother Murphy's, an 'iconic place in uptown Normal,' put up for sale\u2019 by Paul Swiech :: The Pantagraph\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pantagraph.com\/business\/local\/mother-murphy-s-an-iconic-place-in-uptown-normal-put\/article_3df282cd-26cc-510b-8740-10001955b820.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported in December 2019 that both endeavors were listed for sale<\/a><\/span> by the Williamses, who wished to retire and preferred handing them over to young upstarts instead of liquidating the assets. The same month, <strong>ANYTHING BUT NORMAL<\/strong> appeared at the <strong>YouTube<\/strong> channel of \u201c<strong>Fell Hall Productions<\/strong>,\u201d named for the location of the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"School of Communication :: Illinois State University\" href=\"https:\/\/communication.illinoisstate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>School of Communication<\/strong><\/a><\/span> on the ISU campus. (A postscript at the end of the piece mentions this turn of events and may have been added at the last minute.) Good vibes would soon coalesce in late February when <strong>Noah Anderson, Colton Walsh<\/strong>, and <strong>Griffin Burns<\/strong> announced through the Mother Murphy\u2019s <strong>Facebook<\/strong> page they had assumed ownership of Shockwaves and the Emporium. Despite the unfortunate timing of the changeover with the beginning of our coronavirus crisis, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Mother Murphy\u2019s @ Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mothermurphysshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the trio is actively sustaining the shops by offering new products and responding to customer suggestions<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mIfmpt4sPHs\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~~~<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As for the short itself, <strong>ANYTHING BUT NORMAL<\/strong> is primarily an extended interview with Mike Williams that is augmented by inserts of vintage photographs and video, conventional in every sense but easy to digest for those who have yet to climb the decorated stairwell to Mother Murphy\u2019s. ISU classmates <strong>Ebad Khan, Joel Anderson, Nasia Arnold<\/strong>, and <strong>Scott Wrzala<\/strong> did a solid job with their piece; it\u2019s paced well over a 13-minute length and cleanly photographed and edited. If anything, <strong>NORMAL<\/strong> resembles a lifestyle segment from a magazine show as opposed to the evening news-type urgency of <strong>MAKING A MURAL<\/strong>, which is about a public artwork in danger of being demolished. Both projects are also indicative of what \u201clocal video production\u201d usually consists of if not an industrial film or a television commercial, far removed from the narrative efforts like <strong>PEORIA<\/strong> that <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"L'episode un C-U: PEORIA plays TV :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=13798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we\u2019re discussing in a separate series on <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C-U Blogfidential<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>. In the end, the stories of our communities can be told in many ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It took me forever as a younger man to visit Mother Murphy\u2019s for the first time, while I\u2019m more prone these days to visiting <strong>North Street Records<\/strong> and <strong>Waiting Room Records<\/strong> on the street level of the same block, yet I would be extremely sad if I ever looked up from the sidewalk and realized they had quietly vanished like the end of an incense stick. (Neighboring business owners <strong>Jim Wilson<\/strong> and <strong>Jared Alcorn<\/strong> of the aforementioned stores, along with <strong>Chuck Payne<\/strong> of <strong>Shorty\u2019s Barber Shop<\/strong>, provide on-screen salutes to both the Emporium and the city\u2019s revitalization project that has resulted in \u201cuptown\u201d Normal.) I hope the new owners stick with the mellow program that has defined it for so long and only add small and sensible improvements. I\u2019m also glad that today\u2019s students are willing to take stock of the old school as the world around us changes rapidly. Now, I want to put on the coolest thing I ever bought from Mother Murphy\u2019s \u2013 a 12-inch promotional record with a live recording of <strong>Blue \u04e6yster Cult<\/strong>\u2019s \u201c<strong>Godzilla<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 except that both platter and turntable are many miles away from <strong>MFHQ Remote<\/strong>. Oh, <em>no<\/em>, there goes <strong>Tokyo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">~ Jason Pankoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.<\/em> Yes, I see it in the picture below. Go, <em>go<\/em>, <strong>Godzilla<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>p.s.2<\/em> Just like all the other schools of higher learning within easy driving distance of the C-U, Illinois State University does not offer a film production major. Instead of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"In My Backyard: Year 8 :: C-U Blogfidential\" href=\"https:\/\/www.micro-film-magazine.com\/cublog\/?p=10593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pulling out the ol\u2019 soapbox for one more round<\/a><\/span>, however, I\u2019ll offer constructive options to the young people who are yearning to get their start in making media without having to move far away. For instance, ISU students talked to the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daily Vidette<\/span><\/strong> a few years ago about how <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018ISU's secret film society\u2019 by La\u2019Nita Brooks :: The Daily Vidette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.videtteonline.com\/features\/isus-secret-film-society\/article_da3391e2-17eb-11e7-848c-9b12e2ffd81c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they\u2019re approximating a film school experience with what is available to them<\/a><\/span> over in <strong>Bloomington-Normal<\/strong>. Elsewhere, the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Herald &amp; Review<\/span><\/strong> reported yesterday the <strong>Arts Technology and Administration<\/strong> program at <strong>Millikin University<\/strong> in <strong>Decatur<\/strong> had <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Aston Hall continues its creative streak as home to new production studio\u2019 by Donnette Beckett :: The Herald &amp; Review\" href=\"https:\/\/herald-review.com\/watch-now-aston-hall-continues-its-creative-streak-as-home-to-new-production-studio\/article_a113bacd-5a1d-579d-b7e9-7f4f4c604733.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">built for their students a brand-new lab studio dedicated to photography and videography<\/a><\/span>, an effort led by department chair <strong>Jessa Wilcoxen<\/strong> as well as lecturers <strong>Johnny Power<\/strong> and <strong>Eric Hector<\/strong>. It was also announced yesterday by the <strong>College of Media<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign<\/strong> that <a title=\"\u2018Largest gift ever to UI College of Media a \u2018game changer\u2019\u2019 by Debra Pressey :: The News-Gazette\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/local\/largest-gift-ever-to-ui-college-of-media-a-game-changer\/article_9b08a907-ff9a-5dd4-9353-a14fb46e9f87.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>California<\/strong>-based entrepreneurs and media veterans, <strong>Richard<\/strong> and <strong>Leslie Frank<\/strong>, gifted them $7.5 million<\/span><\/a> to revamp their broadcast and editing facilities as well as launch an endowment to afford special programs and guest speakers, all geared towards a state-of-the-art education in journalism.
