It is about the belatedly released and long-forgotten turkey, <strong>BAD CHARLESTON CHARLIE<\/strong>, which also was the first independent feature film to be produced in the <strong>Champaign County<\/strong> area of which we\u2019re aware. It is certainly not worth one-tenth of the asking price for <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BAD CHARLESTON CHARLIE Star Classics VHS @ eBay\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/BAD-CHARLESTON-CHARLIE-VHS-ACTION-COMEDY-ROSS-HAGEN-JOHN-CARRADINE-CARMEN-ZAPATA\/121973906165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the rare VHS cassette that has been listed on <strong>eBay<\/strong> for years<\/a><\/span> but, if you want to <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BAD CHARLESTON CHARLIE @ Rarefilm\" href=\"http:\/\/rarefilm.net\/bad-charleston-charlie-1973-ivan-nagy-ross-hagen-kelly-thordsen-hoke-howell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">take a gander at the bootleg rip<\/a><\/span> offered by the <strong>Rarefilm<\/strong> website for historic purposes or whatnot, then be our guest. Modern (e.g., online) discourse on <strong>BAD<\/strong> is pretty nonexistent, although the former <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/strong> columnist <strong>Larry Harnisch<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Before YouTube\u2019 by Larry Harnisch :: The Los Angeles Times\" href=\"https:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/thedailymirror\/2007\/12\/before-youtube.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has milked some fun<\/a><\/span> out of its bad movie reputation <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Movieland Mystery Photo\u2019 by Larry Harnisch :: The Daily Mirror\" href=\"https:\/\/ladailymirror.com\/2017\/02\/06\/movieland-mystery-photo-412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than once<\/a><\/span>, but I\u2019ll always value the interview that star and producer <strong>Ross Hagen<\/strong> gave to me 20 years ago that ran in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MICRO-FILM<\/span> 3<\/strong>. He and wife <strong>Claire Hagen<\/strong> were passionate and generous to a fault while talking about the project and it seems petty at this point to dump on <strong>BAD<\/strong> like scurvy gravy or little-loved cranberry sauce. It\u2019s yet another footnote in the annals of film culture in <strong>Champaign, Urbana<\/strong>, and the cities beyond, one that I\u2019ll gladly retain. <strong>Troma Entertainment<\/strong>, featured in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MF<\/span> 3<\/strong> as well thanks to our man <strong>Marty McKee<\/strong> and his discussion with rascally Troma head <strong>Lloyd Kaufman<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BAD CHARLESTON CHARLIE :: Troma Entertainment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.troma.com\/films\/bad-charleston-charlie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">owns the <strong>BAD<\/strong> rights and hasn\u2019t done chuck with it<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Believe it or not, Hagen and costar <strong>Hoke Howell<\/strong> are now appearing in one of the only movies showing at any capacity through a venue in downstate <strong>Illinois<\/strong>. <strong>The Normal Theater<\/strong> is offering virtual rentals of the 1989 direct-to-video flick <strong>ACTION U.S.A.<\/strong> until this coming <strong>Thursday, December 3<\/strong>, while the <strong>Vinegar Syndrome Archive<\/strong> label has <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"ACTION U.S.A. :: Vinegar Syndrome\" href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/collections\/frontpage\/products\/action-usa-vsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revealed a surprise Blu-ray edition of the same<\/a><\/span> during their extended <strong>Black Friday<\/strong> sale. Being old pros from a seamy exploitation side of <strong>Hollywood<\/strong> that doesn\u2019t exist anymore, Howell passed in 1997 as did Claire Hagen in 2003 and Ross Hagen in 2011. They\u2019d be thrilled by these sorts of B-movie revivals, I&#8217;m sure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>50 Years Ago<\/strong> \u2026 <em>November 1970:<\/em> Location filming commences in the <strong>Champaign<\/strong> and <strong>Vermilion<\/strong> counties of east central <strong>Illinois<\/strong> on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"BAD CHARLESTON CHARLIE :: AFI Catalog\" href=\"http:\/\/catalog.afi.com\/Catalog\/MovieDetails\/54839\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>BAD CHARLESTON CHARLIE<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, an independent action-comedy feature derived from the exploits of <a title=\"\u2018New podcast series dramatizes Charlie Birger story\u2019 by Christi Mathis, SIU Media Services :: The Southern Illinoisan\" href=\"https:\/\/thesouthern.com\/entertainment\/books-and-literature\/new-podcast-series-dramatizes-charlie-birger-story\/article_1ed56e0b-254c-51d3-bc66-b486f8ad5506.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Prohibition<\/strong>-era gangster and dubious local legend<\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Charlie Birger<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (1881-1928). <strong>Bad Charleston Charlie Associates<\/strong> and <strong>Studio 9 Productions<\/strong> are partnering on this motion picture, having set up a central office in <strong>Champaign<\/strong> and received investment funds from local businesses, while the main architect of the operation is producer, co-writer, and star <strong>Ross Hagen<\/strong>, who recently appeared in the television show <strong>DAKTARI<\/strong> and the theatrical <strong>Elvis Presley<\/strong> vehicle <strong>SPEEDWAY.<\/strong> Industry professionals that Hagen is welcoming from <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> include director <strong>Ivan Nagy<\/strong>, cinematographer <strong>Michael Neyman<\/strong>, assistant directors <strong>Eric Lidberg<\/strong> and <strong>A.J. Lorea<\/strong>, and performers <strong>Kelly Thordsen, Hoke Howell, Dal Jenkins, Carmen Zapata<\/strong>, and <strong>John Carradine<\/strong>. Community members and <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> students are also playing roles on both sides of the camera, according to articles in the <strong>November 7<\/strong> and <strong>11<\/strong> editions of the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Daily Illini<\/span><\/strong>, in scenes being <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Daily Illini, November 7, 1970 :: Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections, University Library, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/idnc.library.illinois.edu\/?a=d&amp;d=DIL19701107.2.46&amp;e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN---------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photographed at <strong>Kickapoo State Park<\/strong><\/a><\/span> near <strong>Danville<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"The Daily Illini, November 11, 1970 :: Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections, University Library, UIUC\" href=\"https:\/\/idnc.library.illinois.edu\/?a=d&amp;d=DIL19701111.2.51&amp;e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN---------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the tiny town of <strong>Fairmount<\/strong><\/a><\/span> located between Danville and Champaign, and coal mining country in southern Illinois to depict Birger\u2019s exploits before his turn to crime. Interior segments will be completed on sound stages once the visitors return to <strong>California<\/strong>. Word is that <strong>CHARLESTON <\/strong>takes a lighthearted approach to the Birger saga, making him out as a bumbling <strong>Al Capone<\/strong> idolizer instead of a <strong>Robin Hood<\/strong> type with a mean streak as <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018Bloody Williamson: A Chapter in American Lawlessness\u2019 by Paul M. Angle :: University of Illinois Press\" href=\"https:\/\/www.press.uillinois.edu\/books\/catalog\/56zef2zd9780252062339.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he is described in scholarship<\/a><\/span>; the screen story retains his real-life row with the<strong> Ku Klux Klan<\/strong> while it downplays <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"\u2018The Bootlegger Who Took Down the KKK\u2019 by Scott Phillips :: St. Louis Riverfront Times\" href=\"https:\/\/m.riverfronttimes.com\/stlouis\/the-bootlegger-who-took-down-the-kkk\/Content?oid=3065612&amp;storyPage=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his scuffles with the law and omits his clashes against the rival <strong>Shelton brothers<\/strong> gang that involved airplane bombings and assassinations<\/a><\/span>.
